Sangli is about 390 km from Mumbai, on the border of Maharashtra and Karnataka. As a district headquarters, the city is a home for big businesses. The Jain population is quite visible, along with other communities.

By plane

The nearest airport is in Pune, which is 225km from Sangli. Alternatively, Panjim Airport can also be used; it is at a similar distance, but the journey from there takes longer, due to ghat sections on the road.

By road

Sangli is well connected by road from all the major Indian cities.

From Pune: It is a 4.5-hour/225 km drive from Pune to Sangli. The drive along National Highway 48 (previously NH4) is straightforward and scenic. From Kolhapur: It is a 1-hour/50 km drive to Sangli.

Sangli also has good connectivity to Solapur, Belgaum, Bangalore, Hyderabad and other major commercial hubs.

By rail

Sangli has a railway station; additionally, Miraj Junction is about 10 km from the city centre. Multiple trains serve Sangli on the Mumbai - Pune - Miraj - Bangalore route.

Get around

One can travel in Sangli by three wheeler rickshaws or taxis. City bus service is also available along some major routes.

Monsoon season

Take extra care when travelling to the destinations during the monsoon (Jul-Sep). Heavy rainfall can cause flash floods especially around the river Panchaganga and Krishna. Keep up to date with local news as many of these attractions are shut or inaccessible during this season.

Thunderstorms are common and may happen at any time, however especially in evenings, so limit travel to attractions in forest areas during these times.

Mosquitoes carry diseases such as dengue fever so wear mosquito repellent from well-known brands such as Good Knight.
