Sasmuan is a town in southwestern Pampanga, Philippines. It is a quiet fishing town with extensive wetlands bypassed by the province's major highways.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Sasmuan is known to have existed in the precolonial era, with its name having been derived from a Kapampangan term for a meeting place of the ancient rulers known as datus. During the Spanish occupation, its named was written as Sexmoan, with the spelling blamed on the colonizers’ inability to pronounce the native name. During the American period, the town was a subject of ridicule by English speakers, particularly US soldiers stationed in Clark, for the sexual connotations inadvertently created when the town was renamed, until in 1994, the prudish locals decided to change the name back to its indigenous spelling.
Bypassed by major highways and notwithstanding damage caused by the Mount Pinatubo eruption in 1991, Sasmuan is a quiet fishing community sustained by the extensive wetlands of the Pampanga and Pasig-Potrero River deltas. But since the 21st century, a combination of factors such as climate change, rising sea levels, typhoons, high tide, improper land conversion and excessive groundwater extraction have irreversibly submerged numerous barangays and triggered ground subsidence across town, resulting in an increase of abandoned homes and edifices surrounded by brackish estuarine water. Looking at maps of Sasmuan, one could be forgiven to think that the town eerily resembles Venice, with thinly-stretched settlements gathered around spider web-like roads that double as dikes and fishpond fences stretching southwards into Manila Bay, where many barangays are in danger of disappearing altogether.
Get in
[edit | edit source]Sasmuan is bypassed by the major highways of Pampanga. From Manila, take the San Fernando exit along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) leading to the Gapan-Olongapo Road, also known as Jose Abad Santos Avenue (JASA). From San Fernando, go west towards Guagua or Lubao, where both towns have roads connecting to Sasmuan, with the one from Lubao doubling as a dike.
From Lubao and Guagua, there are tricycles servicing downtown Sasmuan. Fares from Guagua cost between P70-80, while fares from Lubao are cheaper due to its shorter distance.
Get around
[edit | edit source]
Downtown Sasmuan is compact and easily accessible on foot. Tricycles are the main form of transportation between barangays.
While downtown Sasmuan is accessible by motor vehicle, a trip to the barangays and wetlands further south requires a boat.

Stay safe
[edit | edit source]A low-lying town, Sasmuan is regularly subjected to flooding from the Pampanga River system during the rainy season, which is exacerbated by typhoons and high tide from Manila Bay.
Stay healthy
[edit | edit source]Due to chronic flooding, medication against leptospirosis (a disease carried by rat urine) is necessary after wading into floodwaters.
Respect
[edit | edit source]Be respectful when discussing the chronic flooding situation, as many residents have had enough from the long-term disruptions and displacement. Since 2025, protests have erupted in town after it emerged that public funds meant for the construction of dikes and flood control measures have been embezzled by corrupt politicians, engineers and contractors.
