Understand
[edit | edit source]Shaanxi is a province in north-central China. It stretches from the Loess Plateau in the north to the Qinling Mountains in the south. The central region, known as Guanzhong, includes the Wei River Valley and the provincial capital, Xi'an.
History
[edit | edit source]Shaanxi has played an important role in Chinese history. Several major dynasties, including the Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang, were associated with the region. Xi'an, known in ancient times as Chang'an, served as the capital of several dynasties and was an important center of trade along the Silk Road. Historical sites across the province include ancient city walls, imperial tombs and archaeological remains.
Climate
[edit | edit source]Shaanxi has a varied climate because of its geography. Northern Shaanxi is generally drier, with cold winters and hot summers. The central Guanzhong region also has cold winters and hot summers, while southern Shaanxi is more humid. Most rainfall occurs during the warmer months, but conditions vary across the province.

Shaanxi has its own cuisine which is rather different than the more commonly experienced Cantonese, Beijing, Shanghai or Sichuan cuisines. Shaanxi cuisine is particularly noted for its noodles, which come in many shapes and sizes and come accompanied with many different types of sauce. One is noteworthy for its name: biangbiang noodles (![]()
面, biángbiáng miàn), very wide, thick, chewy noodles in a sauce and topped with lots of hot chili peppers, have a name that can't even be written on most computers! The character for biáng — which refers to the sound made when stretching the noodles by pulling them and slapping them on the table — is arguably the most complex Chinese characters that's in frequent use. It was only added to the Unicode standard computer character set in 2020.
