Shakotan

Shakotan (積丹) is a sparsely populated peninsula on the western coast of Hokkaido, south of Otaru.

The local tourist association has a bilingual guide site.

Short day trip from Otaru and Niseko by car.

The only way to navigate through Shakotan is by car.

Hike in the many designated trails in the area.

This area is bear territory. If walking or hiking in nature try to be noisy to prevent any encounters with bears.

Being a series of fishing villages along the cost, Shakotan is famous for its fresh seafood. However, most restaurants in Shakotan close by 16:00.
