Suhum

Suhum is a peri-urban town and the capital of the Suhum Municipal District, a district in the Ashanti-Kwahu region of Ghana. Suhum had a population of 126,000 in 2021.

Suhum sits on the main transport route between Accra and Kumasi. The town is an important commercial, agricultural and transportation centre for the surrounding communities.

Suhum lies within the forest zone of southern Ghana, in an area of fertile soils and relatively abundant rainfall. Agriculture is an important part of the local economy, with cocoa, cassava, plantain, maize, cocoyam and vegetables among the crops cultivated in the surrounding area. The town's markets provide an outlet for agricultural produce from nearby villages.

The population is predominantly Akan, and Twi is widely spoken. Suhum has schools, health facilities, markets, shops, banks and other services that serve both residents and people from surrounding rural communities.

The town's position on the Accra–Kumasi transport corridor makes it a convenient stopping point for travellers moving between southern Ghana and the interior. Its surroundings are characterised by tropical vegetation, farmland and gently rolling terrain.

Suhum has a warm and humid tropical climate. Rainfall is generally sufficient to support the area's vegetation and agricultural activities, with wetter and drier periods occurring during the year. Temperatures remain warm for most of the year, while humidity is often high during the rainy season.

The town lies along the Accra-Kumasi Highway, 63 km north of Accra.

Taxis, shared taxis and minibuses are commonly used for transportation within Suhum and to nearby communities. The central parts of town can also be explored on foot.
