Sumbawanga

Sumbawanga is in northwest Tanzania.

Sumbawanga is the capital of Rukwa Region. It is situated on the Ufipa Plateau in the southwestern part of Tanzania, between Lake Tanganyika and Lake Rukwa. The city is an important administrative, commercial and agricultural centre for the surrounding area.

Sumbawanga serves as the main urban centre of Rukwa Region and provides government, education, health, trade and transport services to a large rural hinterland. The surrounding region is predominantly agricultural, with fertile areas supporting the cultivation of maize, beans, cassava, sunflower, rice and other crops.

The city is also an important trading centre for agricultural products and livestock. Markets in Sumbawanga serve both the urban population and farmers from communities across the Ufipa Plateau.

Sumbawanga has a strong cultural connection with the Fipa people, who are one of the principal ethnic groups of the region. Swahili is widely spoken, while Fipa and other local languages are also used.

Sumbawanga has a relatively mild climate compared with many lowland parts of Tanzania because of its elevated position on the Ufipa Plateau. The area has a distinct rainy season and a longer dry season.

Rainfall supports agriculture across the plateau, while the dry season is generally sunnier and less humid. Temperatures can be noticeably cooler during the evenings and early mornings.

The area around Sumbawanga has long been inhabited by the Fipa and other communities whose livelihoods traditionally depended on agriculture and livestock keeping.

Sumbawanga developed as an administrative and commercial centre during the colonial period and continued to grow after the independence of Tanganyika in 1961.

The city became the administrative centre of Rukwa Region and has since expanded as government institutions, schools, health facilities, markets and transport services have developed.

Buses from Sumbawanga to Mpanda take around 7 hours. Buses from Sumbawanga to Mbeya via the Zambia border of Tunduma take around 5 hours.

From Sumbawanga to the Zambia border town of Tunduma is 230 km. From Tunduma you can take a night train to Kapiri Mposhi Zambia. From Sumbawanga there is also a road going to Mbala in Zambia 120 km.
