Tarabuco

Tarabuco is a town in Bolivia, some 60 km from Sucre. It has gained its fame for its handicrafts and arts, best seen at its Sunday market. Tarabuco (and area around) has a deep tradition in festival clothing and handicrafts, and some history of cannibalism (you can gain an overview in Museo de Arte Indígena ASUR in Sucre).

Many agencies offer a Sunday daytrip from Sucre, leaving at around 08:00, at Bs. 30. Public transport is frequent and cheaper (Bs. 10 one way).

The town is not big and can be walked on foot.

• An amazingly colourful collection of rural people come to town to buy necessary household items and clothing.
• On the way from Sucre there is a statue of dancing Jesus.
• Occasional exhibitions and live artistic performances (i.e. diablada from Oruro) in Samay Wasi cultural space and restaurant.
• Status in main square, depicting local people and cannibalism tradition in history.

Once a year, in March, there is town fiesta - a bustling event (with dances and traditional wrestling) accompanying Sunday market. If you are on time, take a part.

The market is an outstanding place to see and buy local textiles and other handicraft items. A section of the market deals not in cash but in barter.

• Samay Wasi (Three or four blocks from the main plaza, ask people). Locals may call the place cafe, but there's something to eat there too, and there are artistic exhibitions and performances in the place. (updated Jan 2019)
