Tongo Hills

The Tongo Hills are a group of hills near Tongo in the Ghanaian Northern Plains. The highest elevation is 355 m.

Tongo Hills are a group of rocky hills near Tongo in Ghana's Upper East Region. The hills are an important natural and cultural landmark of the area and are known for their granite rock formations, caves, traditional shrines and sacred sites associated with the Talensi people.

The hills rise above the surrounding savanna landscape and contain numerous exposed rock surfaces and large boulders. Their unusual shapes and elevated viewpoints make the area one of the more distinctive landscapes in the Upper East Region.

Tongo Hills are closely connected with the traditional religious and cultural practices of the Talensi communities. Some caves, rock formations and other places in the hills are regarded as sacred, and visitors should treat them with respect.

The hills are located close to Tongo and are within easy reach of Bolgatanga, the regional capital. The surrounding countryside consists mainly of Guinea savanna, cultivated fields and scattered settlements.

The area is particularly interesting for travellers who want to combine natural scenery with an understanding of northern Ghanaian culture and traditional beliefs.

The Tongo Hills have long been an important part of the cultural landscape of the Talensi people of northern Ghana. The hills contain traditional sacred places, shrines, caves and rock formations that have been associated with local religious practices and community traditions for generations.

Traditional authorities and spiritual leaders have historically played an important role in protecting and managing significant places within the hills. Certain areas are regarded as sacred and may have restrictions on access or activities.

Tongo Hills consist of a series of rocky granite outcrops rising above the surrounding Guinea savanna. Large boulders, exposed rock surfaces, narrow passages and natural caves give the hills their characteristic appearance.

The landscape contrasts with the relatively open plains surrounding Tongo and Bolgatanga. During the rainy season, grasses and other vegetation become greener, while the dry season produces a much more arid-looking landscape.

The elevation of the hills provides views across the surrounding savanna, agricultural fields and settlements. Some sections are rugged and require careful walking or climbing.

Tongo Hills has a hot tropical savanna climate. Conditions are generally hottest during the dry season, while the rainy season brings greener vegetation and cooler periods.

The dry season can be dusty, particularly when the Harmattan winds affect northern Ghana. Visitors hiking in the hills should carry sufficient drinking water and protect themselves from the sun.

The Tongo Hills are 20 km southeast from Bolgatanga, which can easily be reached with a car or bus from most other cities. For the last few kilometres, a Tricycle or taxi can be used.

Although there are no marked hiking trails you still can enjoy hiking in the Tongo Hills. There are no official maps, however openstreetmap.org can be used to navigate around the hills.

Food and water can be bought in Tongo, at the market, before entering the Tongo Hills.
