Toubakouta is a city in Central Senegal and a great base for exploring the Sine-Saloum wetlands.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Toubakouta is surrounded by mangroves, waterways, tidal channels, saltwater creeks, palm trees, small islands and traditional villages, making it a good base for exploring the natural environment of the region.
The town is particularly popular with travellers interested in nature, birdwatching, fishing, boat trips and traditional village life. Several lodges and guesthouses around Toubakouta organise excursions into the delta.
The area is also home to Serer communities whose traditional livelihoods include fishing, agriculture and harvesting natural resources from the surrounding wetlands.
Climate
[edit | edit source]Toubakouta has a hot tropical climate with a pronounced dry season and a rainy season. The dry season is generally more comfortable for outdoor activities and wildlife excursions. During the rainy season, the vegetation becomes greener and some roads and paths may become muddy.
Get in
[edit | edit source]Toubakouta is on the main road between Kaolack and The Gambia. From Dakar, the best way to get there is to take a sept place to Ziguinchor and specify to the driver that you wish to get off at Toubakouta.
Get around
[edit | edit source]The area is well served by motor scooter taxis suitable for one or two people, usually for 500CFA. The town is small enough that the locals know every hotel and can take you there quickly.
