Tykocin is a small historic town in Podlaskie, northeastern Poland, on the Narew River, about 30 km west of Białystok. It is one of the most interesting historic towns of Podlasie, with a preserved Baroque urban layout, a reconstructed royal castle, churches and monasteries, and important monuments of the town's former Jewish community.
Tykocin is also a convenient base for exploring the Narew valley, Pentowo, Kiermusy and the nearby Narew National Park.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Tykocin received town rights under Chełmno law from Duke Janusz I of Masovia in 1425. Soon afterwards it became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The surrounding lands were granted to the Gasztołd (Goštautas) family, under whom the town developed rapidly. A church, a Bernardine monastery and an Orthodox church were founded, and a Jewish community was established.
After the extinction of the Gasztołd family, Tykocin became royal property. King Sigismund II Augustus established a starosty here and ordered the expansion of the castle, which served as a residence, treasury and fortress. The town lay on an important route towards Lithuania and Vilnius.
The town suffered from epidemics and warfare in the 17th century. During the Swedish Deluge the castle was occupied by Swedish troops and the surrounding area became a battlefield. In the 18th century Jan Klemens Branicki supported the redevelopment of Tykocin. The town's urban layout was remodelled, the Church of the Holy Trinity was built and a new Bernardine monastery complex was established.
Following the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, Tykocin became part of Prussia. From 1807 it belonged to the Duchy of Warsaw and from 1815 to Congress Poland under Russian rule. Fighting associated with the November Uprising took place near the town in 1831.
Before World War II a large part of Tykocin's population was Jewish. During the German occupation the Jewish community was murdered, primarily in a mass execution in the nearby Łopuchowo forest in August 1941. Tykocin lost its town status in 1950 and regained it in 1992.
Get in

[edit | edit source]Tykocin has no railway station. The nearest station is in Knyszyn, about 17 km away, served by regional trains towards Białystok and Ełk.
For travellers arriving from other parts of Poland, Białystok is usually a much more convenient interchange.
- 1 Białystok railway station, Kolejowa 5, Białystok (The main railway station of Białystok). The PKS Nova bus station is immediately next to the railway station. From there you can continue directly to Tykocin. Walking between the two stations takes only a few minutes.
- 2 PKS Nova Bus Station, Bohaterów Monte Cassino 8, Białystok (Next to Białystok railway station). Departure point for regular PKS Nova buses to Tykocin and, in summer, the Turystyczna Ósemka tourist bus.
A convenient journey is therefore train to Białystok → short walk to the bus station → bus to Tykocin.
By bus
[edit | edit source]Regular buses between Białystok and Tykocin are operated by PKS Nova. There are several services a day, although the timetable changes, so check current departures before travelling.
Turystyczna Ósemka
[edit | edit source]During the summer an additional option is Turystyczna Ósemka ("Tourist Eight"), a regional hop-on, hop-off bus network connecting tourist attractions in Podlaskie.
In the 2026 season Tykocin is served by western loop A1:
- Białystok – Pomigacze – Turośń Kościelna – Kurowo – Tykocin – Choroszcz – Białystok.
Buses start at the PKS Nova bus station in Białystok. In 2026 the service operates from 2 July to 30 August on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A1 departures from Białystok are scheduled for 09:00, 12:30 and 15:00.
The ticket is valid for the day and allows passengers to get off and later continue the journey. Tickets allowing carriage of a bicycle are also available, although bicycle capacity is limited.
By car
[edit | edit source]Tykocin lies on regional road 671, connecting it with Knyszyn and Sokoły.
The town is also easily reached from the S8 expressway via the Tykocin interchange. Driving from Białystok normally takes about 30 minutes.
By bicycle
[edit | edit source]Tykocin is a good cycling destination. Several marked long-distance and regional routes pass through or near the town, including:
- the Green Velo Eastern Cycle Trail,
- the Podlaskie Stork Trail,
- the Narew National Park Cycle Ring.
Green Velo provides access from the direction of Jeżewo Stare, Rzędziany and the Białystok area. Tykocin is also a useful starting point for shorter rides to Pentowo and Kiermusy.
In summer bicycles can also be carried on selected Turystyczna Ósemka buses with the appropriate ticket.
Get around
[edit | edit source]The historic centre is compact and best explored on foot. The Great Synagogue is about 500 m from Stefan Czarniecki Square, while the castle is a little over 1 km from the market square.
A car is unnecessary for exploring central Tykocin, but useful for trips to Kiermusy or the national parks.
A bicycle is particularly convenient for exploring the surroundings. Pentowo is only about 1.5–2 km from Tykocin and Kiermusy about 4–5 km from the centre.

One of the most important surviving Baroque synagogues in Poland and part of the Museum in Tykocin. The interior retains its central bimah and Hebrew wall inscriptions.

- 4 Stefan Czarniecki Square, plac Stefana Czarnieckiego (Historic town centre). A spacious Baroque market square surrounded by historic buildings. The Church of the Holy Trinity dominates its eastern side and a monument to Stefan Czarniecki stands in its centre.
- 5 Plac Czarnieckiego 10 – House Museum, plac Stefana Czarnieckiego 10 (On the northern side of the square, in a historic wooden house), ☏ +48 505 029 309. A small house museum and independent centre documenting the history of Tykocin and its inhabitants. Its multimedia exhibition 133 Stories. Tykocin in 1885–2018 presents the town's history through the lives of its residents. Temporary exhibitions and local-heritage projects are also organised here.
- 6 Monument to Stefan Czarniecki, plac Stefana Czarnieckiego (In the centre of the market square). One of Tykocin's most recognisable landmarks and an important orientation point in the historic centre.
- 7 Church of the Holy Trinity, plac Stefana Czarnieckiego 10 (At the eastern end of the market square), ☏ +48 85 718 16 43. A monumental 18th-century late-Baroque church. Its twin towers and arcaded wings form the characteristic architectural closure of the market square.
- 8 Alumnat (Veterans' hospital), Poświętna 1 (Beside the Narew, the church and Stefan Czarniecki Square), ☏ +48 600 941 351. A historic 17th-century institution established for disabled military veterans, and one of Tykocin's most characteristic buildings.
- 9 Bernardine Monastery Complex, Klasztorna (About 500 m south of Stefan Czarniecki Square). A large late-Baroque monastery complex built in the 18th century. Together with the church, synagogue and castle it forms one of the main groups of monuments in Tykocin.
- 10 Post mill (On the eastern side of town). A preserved wooden post mill dating from 1887.
- 11 Jewish cemetery, Holendry (On the western edge of town, about 1 km from the Great Synagogue). One of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Poland, founded in the 16th century. A number of historic matzevot survive.
- 12 Narew Boulevard (Bulwar nad Narwią) (Along the southern bank of the Narew in central Tykocin, near the Alumnat and bridge). A roughly 730-m pedestrian and cycle promenade along the river, with benches, lighting and educational boards. It is a pleasant place for walking, watching the river and photographing the Tykocin skyline.
Do
[edit | edit source]Walk around historic Tykocin
[edit | edit source]Most of the major sights can be seen on a several-kilometre walking circuit. Stefan Czarniecki Square is a convenient starting point.
A suggested route is:
- Stefan Czarniecki Square and the hetman's monument.
- Church of the Holy Trinity.
- Plac Czarnieckiego 10 House Museum.
- Alumnat.
- Narew Boulevard and the historic bridge.
- Tykocin Castle.
- Return through the centre towards the former Jewish quarter.
- Great Synagogue.
- Talmudic House.
- Jewish cemetery.
- Bernardine Monastery Complex.
The walk takes several hours at a relaxed pace if you also visit the castle and synagogue museum.
On the Narew

- 1 FlisakPark Tykocin – Narew Museum and cruises, Browarna 17 (On the Narew, west of the historic centre), ☏ +48 505 725 160. A small tourist harbour devoted to the Narew. Seasonal cruises are operated by the small riverboat Malinka, and a small Narew Museum also operates here. Cruises depend on season and water levels.
The boulevard and harbour offer a different view of the town from the river. The Narew valley is also attractive for birdwatching and nature photography.
Cycling
[edit | edit source]Tykocin lies in one of the more attractive cycling areas of Podlaskie. The landscape is mostly flat, so most local routes do not require advanced cycling experience.
Green Velo
[edit | edit source]The Green Velo Eastern Cycle Trail passes through Tykocin. It connects the town with Jeżewo Stare, Rzędziany and a network of routes towards Białystok and Narew National Park.
The section towards Jeżewo Stare overlaps with part of the Narew National Park Cycle Ring.
Tykocin – Pentowo – Kiermusy

- Tykocin → Pentowo → Kiermusy → Tykocin
Approximate distances:
- Tykocin – Pentowo: 1.5 km
- Pentowo – Kiermusy: 3 km
- Kiermusy – Tykocin: 4–5 km
The ride can be combined with visits to the European Stork Village at Pentowo, Kiermusy and the Narew valley.
“To the border of old Poland” loop
[edit | edit source]A partly signposted excursion of about 29 km:
- Jeżewo Stare → Tykocin → Pentowo → Kiermusy → Nieciecie → Łopuchowo → Zawady → Jeżewo Stare
The route passes Tykocin's monuments, the European Stork Village, Kiermusy, the Narew valley and small Podlaskie villages. It can also be started in Tykocin.
Narew National Park Cycle Ring
[edit | edit source]A longer blue-marked route of about 87 km:
- Choroszcz → Tykocin interchange → Tykocin → Kurowo → Łapy → Suraż → Turośń Dolna → Choroszcz
Most of the route is on paved roads. Between Tykocin and Jeżewo Stare it overlaps with Green Velo. It is suitable as a full-day excursion for experienced cyclists.
Podlaskie Stork Trail
[edit | edit source]The red-marked Podlaskie Stork Trail also passes through the Tykocin area. The entire route is more than 400 km long and crosses a large part of Podlaskie. Near Tykocin it connects the town, the Pentowo area and the Narew valley.
It is particularly attractive for birdwatchers, nature lovers and photographers.
Events
[edit | edit source]Tykocin has an active programme of events, especially from late spring to early autumn. Current dates are published by Port Kultury Tykocin.
Two of the most distinctive events are large historical re-enactments connected with the town's 17th-century military history.
- 2 Storming of Tykocin Castle (Szturm Zamku w Tykocinie), Tykocin Castle, Puchalskiego 3 (Held in winter; check the current date before travelling). A large historical re-enactment recalling fighting for the castle during the Swedish Deluge. Re-enactors portray Commonwealth and Swedish troops, infantry, cavalry and artillery. The 12th edition was held in 2026.
- 17th-century Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth Army Camp (Obóz Wojsk Rzeczypospolitej XVII wieku), Klasztorna area and historic centre (A summer re-enactment; in 2026 it was held from 31 July to 2 August). A multi-day historical camp presenting military and everyday life in the 17th-century Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Activities include hussar demonstrations, skirmishes and drill, displays of arms and equipment, opportunities to visit the camp and meet re-enactors, early-music performances, a military procession through Tykocin to the castle and artillery demonstrations.
- Tykocin Days (Dni Tykocina), Tykocin (Usually held in early summer). A multi-day town festival with concerts and historical, sporting and family events. Some activities take place near Klasztorna Street and in the historic centre.
- Tykocin – Hope in the Choir (Tykocin – Nadzieja w Chórze), Church of the Holy Trinity, Stefan Czarniecki Square (Usually held in spring). A national competition and festival of sacred choral music held in the Baroque Church of the Holy Trinity. The ninth edition was held in 2026.
- Royal Singing (Królewskie Śpiewanie), Tykocin (A summer music festival). A multi-day music event held in the historic surroundings of Tykocin.
- Tykocin Honey Feast (Tykocińska Biesiada Miodowa), Klasztorna area (Usually held in August). One of Tykocin's largest recurring events, devoted to beekeeping, honey and regional food. It includes local producers, a market, food stalls, performances and concerts. The 27th edition is in 2026.
- Night of Museums – Tykocin at dusk, Historic centre of Tykocin (Usually in May). An evening programme combining guided walks with visits to monuments and stories about the town's history. Depending on the edition, venues may include the market square, synagogue, church and castle.
- 3 Kiermusy Antiques Fair (Jarmark Staroci w Kiermusach), Kiermusy 12 (Usually on the first Sunday of the month; check the current date before travelling), ☏ +48 501 607 566, promocja@kiermusy.com.pl. A large regional market for antiques, collectibles, handicrafts and vintage objects.

Seating overlooks the river and historic Tykocin. Coffee and drinks are also available. Check opening days outside the main summer season.

Port Kultury organises concerts, art workshops, exhibitions, outdoor cinema, guided walks, historical re-enactments, family events and major annual celebrations such as Tykocin Days and the Tykocin Honey Feast.
Its events calendar also lists smaller concerts, workshops, exhibitions, guided walks and outdoor activities. Port Kultury publishes the local periodical Czas Tykocina, whose current and archive issues are available online.

A century-old manor beside an oxbow of the Narew and a designated European Stork Village. Numerous white storks nest on the property and observation towers provide views of the nests. Most interesting during the stork breeding season.

A tourist complex styled after a traditional Polish manor. It includes Karczma Rzym restaurant and accommodation. Kiermusy and Pentowo can easily be visited on the same cycling trip.
National parks

- Narew National Park, Kurowo 10, 18-204 Kobylin-Borzymy (Southeast of Tykocin; Kurowo is also accessible via the Narew National Park Cycle Ring), ☏ +48 85 718 14 17. Protects the multi-channel valley of the Narew. Attractions include wetlands, boardwalks, birdwatching points, kayaking and the park headquarters in a historic manor at Kurowo.
- Biebrza National Park, Osowiec-Twierdza 8, 19-110 Goniądz (A longer trip north of Tykocin; easiest by car or as part of a longer cycling tour), ☏ +48 85 738 30 00. Poland's largest national park, protecting the extensive Biebrza Marshes. Particularly attractive for birdwatching and wildlife.
Other possible excursions include:
- Choroszcz – Branicki Palace and park; it can be combined with the Narew National Park cycling route.
- Knyszyn – a small historic town northeast of Tykocin.
- Strękowa Góra – viewpoint over the Narew valley and the area around the beginning of the historic Tsar's Road.
- Białystok – the regional capital and main transport hub for Tykocin.
