Yeongdeungpo (영등포) and Guro (구로) are districts in Seoul. Yeongdeungpo is mostly a commercial area, and many of the nation's media companies are based here especially in Yeouido. The island of Yeouido is located in Yeongdeungpo-gu, and is the site of the National Assembly, the headquarters of LG and Korean Broadcasting System, and many financial companies and shopping centers.
Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station
Interestingly enough, Yeongdeungpo is home to the Seoul Military Service Examination Center. It's a place that every 19- to 20-year-old male in Seoul must visit at least once.
Yeongdeungpo–Guro is one of the key industrial and commercial areas in western Seoul and has played an important role in the city’s modern development.
During the Joseon Dynasty, much of this area consisted of farmland and riverside settlements along the Han River and Anyangcheon. The region was sparsely populated and primarily agricultural, supplying food to the capital.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Yeongdeungpo and Guro underwent rapid transformation due to industrialization and the expansion of railway infrastructure. Yeongdeungpo emerged as a major logistics and commercial center, while Guro became known for large-scale factories and industrial complexes, particularly during Korea’s rapid economic growth in the mid-20th century.
Today, Yeongdeungpo–Guro has evolved into a mixed-use area combining business districts, residential neighborhoods, traditional markets, and redeveloped industrial zones. While Yeongdeungpo is known for finance, shopping, and nightlife around Yeouido and Times Square, Guro reflects Seoul’s industrial heritage alongside growing IT offices, cultural spaces, and local communities.
Seoul/Yeongdeungpo–Guro consists of two districts (구 gu): Yeongdeungpo and Guro. This area combines major business centers, transportation hubs, riverside parks, and long-established residential neighborhoods.
Yeongdeungpo-gu includes Yeouido, one of Seoul’s primary financial and political districts, home to the National Assembly, large office towers, riverside parks, and shopping complexes such as Times Square. The district also features traditional areas like Yeongdeungpo Market, reflecting its historical role as a commercial hub.
Guro-gu is centered around Guro Digital Complex, a redeveloped industrial zone that now hosts IT companies, startups, and offices, alongside dense residential neighborhoods. While quieter than central Seoul, Guro offers affordable dining, local nightlife, and convenient transportation connections to the rest of the city.
Together, Yeongdeungpo and Guro present a contrast between modern finance, industry, and everyday urban life, making the area an important link between central Seoul and the western suburbs.
Yeongdeungpo (영등포) (Yeongdeungpo-gu) A major commercial and financial district featuring Yeouido, shopping malls, traditional markets, nightlife areas, and extensive Han River parks.
Guro (구로) (Guro-gu) Historically industrial, now a mixed residential and business district centered on Guro Digital Complex, known for IT offices, affordable eateries, and local neighborhoods.
Yeongdeungpo–Guro experiences a typical temperate climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are cold and relatively dry, with January temperatures generally ranging from -5°C to 2°C. Summers are warm and humid, with July and August being the hottest months, when daytime temperatures often reach around 30°C.
The summer monsoon season brings the heaviest rainfall, with July receiving the most precipitation. Due to the proximity of the Han River and Anyangcheon, humidity levels can feel slightly higher during summer. Snowfall occurs occasionally in winter but is usually light and short-lived.
July receives the most precipitation, with 414.4 millimeters of rainfall. Snow is not common in eastern Seoul.
