Featured articles are notable articles featured on the Main Page. These can be subdivided into regular and irregular features. Both regular and irregular features get featured in a {{Banner}} in the JCarrousel on the Main Page.
Purpose
[edit]The purpose of featuring articles, is to shine light upon notable destinations and well-developed articles. This is done to on the one hand celebrate the work of Wikivoyagers and achievements of Wikivoyage, and on the other to offer readers inspiration for their next travel destinations. Additionally, these featured articles also put some of Wikivoyage's better articles front and centre to its readers.
Types of feature
[edit]Featured come in two flavours: regular features, following a rotating schedule of articles, and irregular features, which get featured whenever they are available and relevant.
Regular features
[edit]Regular features follow a predefined agenda of month-long slots. Three slots on the Main Page are reserved for regular features. These consist of Destinations of the Month, Off the Beaten Path, and Featured Travel Topics. The featured articles get rotated to the next article in queue on the 1st, 11th and 21st of each month respectively. These articles to be featured are decided upon in Wikivoyage:Destination of the Month candidates.
Irregular features
[edit]Unlike regular features, irregular features do not follow a strict agenda. They are included as featured articles when quality articles are available, and when these articles are relevant for notable events. These include, but are not strictly limited to:
- Featured events
- Featured events used to be regularly featured on the Main Page in {{Bottomboxes}}. Depending on availability, there may be between zero and three featured events across any given month of the year. Priority is to be given to major events with dedicated articles (Olympics, World Cups and World Expos), which get featured for their full duration or a maximum of two months, whichever is shortest. Whenever articles dedicated to the event itself are not existent, or do not make sense to create for the occasion, the article of the locality is to be used. For example, the 24h of Le Mans would link to Le Mans. Events without dedicated articles get featured for anywhere between one and two weeks.
- Wikimania
- Wikimania events somewhat regularly get dedicated articles on Wikivoyage. Whenever relevant, these may be included as an irregular feature on the main page starting a month before their start, and ending on their day of closing, for a total of about a month and a few days.
- Joke articles
- Specifically, the annual April Fools article. Though a regular occurrence, these are considered irregular as to not take away the space available to the quality articles in regular rotation. {{Banner}} has a special type for April Fools articles, which make them appear as a regular Destination of the Month until the start of the month of April, when this label is changed automatically for one reading "April Fools!". Featured joke articles are to be queued before the regular features, in order to give the joke effort and running tradition more prominence to unsuspecting readers.
- Celebrations
- A dedicated banner might be featured before regular features to celebrate Wikivoyage's birthday (January 15th) as well as major achievements of the site (reaching certain milestone articles).
Requirements
[edit]Featured articles for any category ought to be at least Guide status to ensure that articles of genuine quality are featured. The further requirements for regular features are detailed on Wikivoyage:Destination of the Month candidates. Those for irregular features are listed on Wikivoyage:Featured articles. As featured articles depend upon {{Banner}}, that template's minimally required parameters need to be filled. Any featured article therefore should have a banner image at 3:1 aspect ratio, and a fitting blurb.
Carrousel order
[edit]The carrousel has five predefined slots available:
- 0. Joke article / Celebrations
- 1. Destination of the Month
- 2. Off the Beaten Path
- 3. Featured Travel Topic
- 4. Featured events / Wikimania
Any featured article needs to fit into one of the categories listed above. Only one article may be featured in each category at any given time. The only exception to this rule is when Wikimania events coincide with a major event with dedicated article, as defined above. Slots 0 and 4 are permitted to be empty.
