Yueyang (岳阳) is a historic port city in Hunan Province, China, situated on the shores of the vast Dongting Lake and along the Yangtze River. It is famous for the ancient Yueyang Tower (岳阳楼), one of the "Three Great Towers of Southern China".
Understand
[edit | edit source]Yueyang has a history of over 2,500 years. Its strategic location at the confluence of Dongting Lake and the Yangtze River made it a key military and trading post in ancient times. The city flourished as a center of culture and commerce.
Yueyang Tower, immortalized by the Northern Song scholar Fan Zhongyan (范仲淹) in his essay Memorial to Yueyang Tower, symbolizes moral integrity and civic duty in Chinese culture. His words — “Be the first to bear hardship, and the last to enjoy comfort” (先天下之忧而忧,后天下之乐而乐) — have become a classic idiom.
Today, Yueyang remains a major transportation hub in northeastern Hunan and a popular tourist destination known for its scenic lake views and historical heritage.

Orientation
[edit | edit source]Yueyang is divided into three main urban districts — Yueyanglou District, Yunxi District, and Junshan District — each offering a different experience of the city.
- Yueyanglou District (岳阳楼区) – The historical and cultural center of the city, home to the famous Yueyang Tower, Dongting Lake waterfront, and the main commercial areas. Most visitors stay in this district.
- Junshan District (君山区) – Located on the western side of Dongting Lake, known for its natural scenery and Junshan Island, which is associated with many ancient legends.
- Yunxi District (云溪区) – The industrial and developing part of Yueyang, hosting the city’s main port facilities and transportation hubs along the Yangtze River.
Together, these districts form the urban core of Yueyang, connected by modern bridges and highways across Dongting Lake. The surrounding counties, such as Miluo and Linxiang, are also easily accessible and worth short excursions.
History
[edit | edit source]Yueyang has a history of over 2,500 years. During the Spring and Autumn period, it was part of the ancient state of Chu. In the Tang Dynasty, the city flourished as an important military and trading hub due to its strategic location at the junction of the Yangtze River and Dongting Lake.
The city reached cultural prominence during the Northern Song Dynasty, when the scholar Fan Zhongyan wrote his famous essay “Memorial to Yueyang Tower,” which turned the tower into a lasting symbol of loyalty, responsibility, and public service in Chinese culture.
In later centuries, Yueyang served as a major river port and regional center for commerce and grain transport. Today, it preserves many of its historical landmarks, including ancient temples, traditional streets, and the scenic Dongting Lake area, reflecting the deep connection between the city’s history and its natural setting.

Comparison Report: Yueyang vs Paris
[edit | edit source]Overview
[edit | edit source]This comparison reviews my Yueyang sandbox article against the Wikivoyage "Star" article for Paris. The goal is to evaluate structure, tone, level of detail, and technical compliance with Wikivoyage standards as part of the Final Touches assignment.
1. Structure
[edit | edit source]- **Paris (Star article)**: Complete and standardized structure (Understand; Get in; Get around; See; Do; Eat; Drink; Sleep; Stay safe; Go next), with clear subsections, listings and many ready-to-use templates and maps.
- **Yueyang (Sandbox)**: Now follows the same overall skeleton. I added missing subsections (Climate; Orientation; History) and reorganized headings to match Wikivoyage conventions.
2. Language and Tone
[edit | edit source]- **Paris**: Traveler-focused, natural English, uses second-person/imperative where helpful, avoids academic tone.
- **Yueyang**: Rewritten to adopt a travel-guide tone. I used AI only for structure and proofreading, then reworked wording manually to ensure original, traveler-oriented phrasing.
3. Practical Details and Data
[edit | edit source]- **Paris**: Includes many concrete details (opening hours, transport times, prices, coordinates), and plentiful listings with contacts or URLs.
- **Yueyang**: Added train/airport information, climate summary, and key attractions. Still needs more specific prices, example accommodations (with concrete names/addresses), and a few more verified listings with working URLs.
4. Cultural & Historical Coverage
[edit | edit source]- **Paris**: Rich cultural descriptions and neighborhood guides giving a clear sense of atmosphere.
- **Yueyang**: Improved historical context (Yueyang Tower, Dongting Lake, Confucian Temple) and added a concise History section to give readers cultural background without becoming encyclopedic.
5. Technical & Visual Elements
[edit | edit source]- **Paris**: Uses many templates, interactive maps, and banner/images that enhance usability.
- **Yueyang**: I added basic templates and a climate table compatible with Wikivoyage syntax, and ensured internal links work. Next steps: add an appropriate Commons banner image and more listings using the / style.
6. Summary of Strengths and Next Steps
[edit | edit source]- **Strengths now**: Correct skeleton structure, improved travel tone, added Climate/Orientation/History, and repaired prior formatting errors.
- **Next steps**:
* Add 5–10 verified listings with GPS coordinates and official URLs. * Add 2–3 concrete accommodation examples and sample price ranges.
* Upload or suggest a banner image on Wikimedia Commons and add it via
when available.
* Request community feedback (posted to Travellers' Pub) and revise per suggestions.
7. Notes about workflow and edits this week
[edit | edit source]- I initially made several edits on the Chinese site by mistake; those edits were reverted. To make up for that, I completed 20 valid edits this week on the English Wikivoyage sandbox and related pages.
- I used AI tools to help check structure and grammar, but the final wording, sources, and wiki code adjustments were done manually to ensure compliance with Wikivoyage standards.
Request for feedback
[edit | edit source]Please review the sandbox article and this comparison. I welcome suggestions on adding reliable listings, suitable banner images, or any style/formatting adjustments needed for the article to reach "Usable" or higher status.
