Luxor is a city in Upper Egypt on the east bank of the Nile River. It is one of Egypt's most important destinations for ancient Egyptian history and archaeology. The modern city is located beside the remains of ancient Thebes, with major monuments on both the east and west banks of the Nile.

• Karnak Temple — A vast temple complex dedicated mainly to Amun and one of the largest ancient religious complexes in the world.
• Luxor Temple — An ancient temple in the centre of modern Luxor, particularly impressive in the evening when it is illuminated.

• Valley of the Kings — A famous archaeological area containing royal tombs from the New Kingdom period.
• Valley of the Queens — A group of tombs associated with queens and other members of the royal families.
• Colossi of Memnon — Two large stone statues standing near the ancient Theban necropolis.
• Temple of Hatshepsut — A distinctive terraced temple built for the female pharaoh Hatshepsut.

A visit to Luxor can combine archaeological sites on both sides of the Nile. Travelers commonly spend one day exploring the East Bank and another exploring the West Bank. Hot-air-balloon flights are also available over the West Bank.

The Nile separates Luxor's East and West Banks. Taxis, private cars, bicycles, boats and organized tours are commonly used to travel between the main sights.

Markets and shops in central Luxor sell souvenirs, Egyptian handicrafts, spices, clothing and locally produced goods. Bargaining is common in many smaller shops.

Restaurants in Luxor serve Egyptian dishes as well as international food. Traditional Egyptian meals commonly include beans, falafel, rice, grilled meat and vegetables.

Luxor has accommodation ranging from budget hostels and guesthouses to international hotels and Nile-side resorts.

Take care in busy tourist areas, especially around major archaeological sites and transport points. Agree on taxi prices before starting a journey when a meter is not used. During the summer, carry water and protect yourself from the strong sun.
