History
[edit source]Gokseong was known as Yoknae during the Baekje period. In 757, during the Unified Silla period, it was renamed Gokseong-gun. The county seat was moved to its present location below Dongaksan Mountain in 1389 after an invasion by Japanese pirates. In 1597, it was incorporated into Namwon during the Japanese invasions of Korea, but it was re-established as a separate county in 1609. Taeansa Temple, founded in 742, and Dorimsa Temple, founded in 660, are among the area's historic Buddhist sites.

Gokseong has four distinct seasons, with considerable differences between summer and winter. Winters are cold, and average low temperatures fall below freezing from December through February. Spring brings gradually warmer weather, while autumn is generally cooler and less rainy than summer, making both seasons suitable for exploring the countryside and visiting local temples.
Summers are hot and humid, with most of the annual rainfall concentrated between June and September. July and August are particularly wet, and heavy monsoon rains can affect outdoor activities and travel plans. Temperatures reach their highest levels in July and August, while September usually begins to bring cooler weather. Visitors planning hikes or trips to riverside areas should check the weather forecast during the summer rainy season. The climate figures above are based on data for 1997–2020.
Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons for outdoor activities, including hiking, cycling, and visiting local temples. Summer visitors should prepare for high humidity and heavy rainfall, while those travelling in winter should bring warm clothing for below-freezing temperatures. As weather conditions can change seasonally, checking the forecast before visiting outdoor attractions is recommended.
