Uyo

Uyo is the capital city of Akwa Ibom State in South South Nigeria. It was home to about 428,000 people in 2006. It is home to the University of Uyo.

Ibibio speakers make up the majority of the population. They are mostly farmers, fishers and traders. Travellers will find many types of seafood available in this coastal town, including fish, prawns, periwinkles, crabs and lobsters.

Economy

The climate of the state allows for favorable cultivation and extraction of agricultural and forest products such as palm produce, rubber, cocoa, rice, cassava, yam, plantain, banana, maize, and timber. In Uyo State maize (Zea mays L) is cultivated on a large scale.

  • Ibeno Beach: Located in Ibeno LGA, Ibeno beach is a 30 km-long beach of clean sea sand that attracts visitors and tourists both within and outside the country on a regular basis. The beach gives a good opportunity to participate in recreational activities and water sports like swimming, surfing, etc. Ibeno beach is also a good choice for parties and picnics.
