Vidisha, historically known as Besnagar, is one of the oldest cities in India, with a history dating back to the Mauryan Empire (3rd century BCE). The Heliodorus Pillar is one of the most significant archaeological landmarks in Vidisha. This 2nd-century BCE pillar, dedicated to Lord Vasudeva (Vishnu), is a testament to the cultural and religious exchanges between India and the Hellenistic world. It is one of the earliest known inscriptions related to Vaishnavism in India and holds immense historical and religious importance.

A group of rock-cut caves dating back to the Gupta period (4th-5th century CE). These caves feature intricate carvings, sculptures, and inscriptions, including the famous Varaha Avatar (boar incarnation of Vishnu).

Built from the ruins of a Hindu temple, this mosque is an example of Indo-Islamic architecture. The temple ruins can still be seen in the structure.

The Dashavatara Temple is a 6th-century temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located in Vidisha. It is one of the earliest examples of Gupta architecture and is renowned for its intricate carvings and architectural brilliance. The temple is named after the ten incarnations (Dashavatara) of Lord Vishnu, which are depicted in its sculptures and reliefs.
