Bounded by the Matla and Thakuran rivers, the West Sundarbans features a polyhaline mangrove ecosystem with dense forests of Ceriops decandra and Excoecaria agallocha. The area serves as a critical habitat for the Bengal tiger, estuarine crocodile and Gangetic dolphin, acting as a vital ecological buffer for the main national park.
