Wildwood Crest

Wildwood Crest is a borough at the southern end of the Wildwood barrier island in Cape May County, in the Southern Shore region of New Jersey. It is the quietest and most residential of the three Wildwoods municipalities — Wildwood, North Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest — and draws primarily families and visitors seeking a lower-key beach experience.

Wildwood Crest is a dry borough; the sale and public consumption of alcohol is prohibited within its borders. Its beaches are among the widest on the Jersey Shore and are free to access. The borough sits at the southern tip of the island, adjacent to Cape May County's undeveloped coastline.

Wildwood Crest occupies roughly the southern third of Five Mile Island, a barrier island separating the Atlantic Ocean from the Intracoastal Waterway. While the main Wildwood boardwalk lies to the north, the Crest has no boardwalk of its own. The area is primarily residential, with Atlantic Avenue serving as the main commercial corridor running north–south through the borough.

The beach in Wildwood Crest is wide — in some places exceeding 1,000 feet from the dunes to the water — and is accessible at multiple street ends along the oceanfront. Because the island has shifted westward over decades, the beach has grown considerably. Lifeguards are on duty at designated access points during summer season.

The borough operates under dry status, meaning alcohol is not available for purchase or public consumption within its limits. Visitors who want a drink will need to cross into the neighboring Wildwood municipality.

The summer season runs from Memorial Day weekend (late May) through Labor Day (early September). July and August are the peak months; the beach fills early on summer weekends and accommodations book up weeks or months in advance during those periods. June and early September typically offer similar beach weather with fewer visitors and lower accommodation rates. The island is accessible and walkable year-round, though most seasonal businesses close after Labor Day.

Several surviving examples of Doo-Wop and Googie architecture characterize Wildwood Crest's mid-century motel stock. The borough, along with neighboring Wildwood, holds one of the largest concentrations of 1950s–60s resort-era architecture in the United States, recognized collectively as the Wildwoods Shore Resort Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. A number of intact examples survive along Atlantic Avenue.

From the north, take the Garden State Parkway southbound to Exit 4B (Rio Grande/Wildwood Crest). Follow NJ Route 47 (Bayshore Road) east to the island, then head south on Atlantic Avenue into Wildwood Crest. From the south or west, the same exit is accessible via the Parkway northbound. Most GPS navigation to Wildwood Crest routes through Exit 4 or 4B.

• Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) — approximately 40 miles north. The closest airport with commercial service. Car rental is available.
• Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) — approximately 65 miles north. Larger selection of flights; car rental widely available.

NJ Transit Route 308 (Atlantic City–Cape May) stops at the Wildwood Transit Center on Rio Grande Avenue. The bus connects to Cape May, Wildwood, North Wildwood, and Atlantic City. Schedules and fares are at njtransit.com. From the transit center, Wildwood Crest is a short bike ride or taxi ride south.

The borough is flat and walkable. Atlantic Avenue runs the length of Wildwood Crest and connects to the broader Wildwood commercial strip to the north. The numbered cross streets running east to west provide direct access to the beach. Most accommodations are within a few blocks of the ocean.

Biking is a practical way to get around. A multi-use path runs along parts of the island. Crest Bike Rental (near the southern end of Atlantic Avenue) offers hourly and daily bicycle rentals. Bikes are permitted on the Wildwood boardwalk before 9 AM in summer.

Golf carts are widely used on the island, including in Wildwood Crest. Shore Shuttles operates a free golf cart shuttle service along Atlantic Avenue; the service runs seasonally and is supported by local business sponsors. Private golf cart rentals are also available from several operators along the main strip.

Taxis serve the island during summer season. Rideshare services (Uber, Lyft) are available but response times can be slow during peak summer weekends.

• Sunset Lake — A tidal lake on the western side of the island bordering the Intracoastal Waterway. The lake and its surrounding park provide a calmer alternative to the ocean beach, with benches, walking paths, and fishing access. Sunsets over the water are a local draw.
• Centennial Park — A small neighborhood park in the Crest with open green space, walking paths, and benches.
• Cape May National Wildlife Refuge – Two Mile Beach Unit — A short drive south of Wildwood Crest, this undeveloped beach unit of the refuge offers a natural shoreline with migratory shorebird habitat. Access is by foot from the parking area. The beach here is undeveloped and off-limits to vehicles.
• Wildwood Crest beach access points — Street-end beach access is available at most numbered avenues running east off Atlantic Avenue, including Rambler Road (site of the borough's lifeguard headquarters) and Miami Avenue. Parking is on residential side streets near each access point rather than in dedicated lots; arriving before mid-morning in peak season makes finding a spot considerably easier. Morning beach walks before the crowds arrive are popular with longer-staying visitors.

• Swimming and sunbathing — The beach is the primary attraction. Lifeguard-protected zones are marked at main access points during summer.
• Fishing — Surf fishing is permitted on the beach. Sunset Lake and the Intracoastal Waterway provide additional spots for shoreline fishing. The Wildwood Crest Pier, accessible from the waterway side, is a locally known family fishing location.
• Biking — Cycling along the island is practical and popular, particularly in the early morning hours before beach traffic builds.
• Water sports — Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available seasonally along the waterway side of the island.

• Events — The borough holds a July 4th civic celebration at Centennial Park, including a public reading of the Declaration of Independence, along with outdoor concerts and civic gatherings through the summer. • Sun'z Up Cafe — A neighborhood breakfast and lunch spot popular with locals and seasonal regulars. Casual setting; known for straightforward American breakfast fare.
• Britton's Gourmet Bakery — A local bakery with pastries, sandwiches, and coffee. A quiet morning stop.

• The Jellyfish Cafe (5911 New Jersey Ave, Crest Station) — Breakfast, lunch, and dinner in Wildwood Crest's central business district. A consistent local option with a broad menu.
• Coastal Blue Oceanside Bar & Grill — Casual dining with a seasonal menu; a short walk or bike ride from most Crest accommodations.
• Tangiers Cafe (6201 Atlantic Ave) — A casual diner-style spot attached to the Tangiers Motel. Serves breakfast and lunch.

Wildwood Crest is a dry borough; no alcohol is sold or served within its limits. Visitors looking for bars or restaurants with alcohol will find options a short walk or drive north along Atlantic Avenue into Wildwood. The main bar and nightlife district is concentrated in Wildwood proper around the boardwalk area.

July and August accommodations book weeks to months in advance; June and early September offer comparable beach conditions with more availability and lower rates.

Most accommodations in Wildwood Crest are family-oriented motels and motor inns along or near Atlantic Avenue. The majority open for the season around Memorial Day and close after Labor Day, though a few operate into October.

• El Coronado Motor Inn, 8501 Atlantic Ave, ☏ +1 609-729-1000. A family motor inn toward the southern end of the Crest. Seasonal. 

The beach has rip current risk typical of the New Jersey coastline. Swim only in lifeguard-supervised zones during staffed hours. Wildwood Crest is a quiet residential community; petty theft from vehicles does occur during peak season — leave valuables out of sight in parked cars.
