Yiwu

Yiwu (义乌; *ȵi u* in Wu, Yìwū in Mandarin) is a county-level city of Jinhua in central Zhejiang Province, roughly 100 km south of Hangzhou. It is world-famous for Yiwu International Trade City, the global hub for small commodity wholesale.

Yiwu is a vibrant commercial centre that attracts traders from every corner of the globe. It grew quickly from a quiet agricultural county into an international marketplace starting in the 1980s. Though best known for wholesale shopping, it also has ancient villages and tasty local food for travellers to discover.

Yiwu is a county-level city of Jinhua in central Zhejiang Province. Famous worldwide as the home of Yiwu International Trade City, it is the global hub for small commodity wholesale. Traders from all continents travel here to source affordable consumer goods. Beyond its massive markets, visitors can also explore old villages and taste local Zhejiang food, making it more than just a business destination.

Yiwu has a long settlement history dating back over 2,000 years. Locals developed the creative “chicken feathers for sugar” barter tradition, showing the region’s long-standing entrepreneurial spirit. The city transformed rapidly starting in the 1980s, when small street markets grew into the giant Yiwu International Trade City. It became a county-level city in 1988 and quickly grew into an internationally famous trading centre.

Yiwu sits within a hilly basin. The city’s beating heart is Futian, where the huge International Trade City stands. The nearby downtown districts hold residential blocks, restaurants and smaller shops. If you want a break from busy markets, the outer towns such as Fotang preserve quiet ancient streets and traditional architecture. High-speed trains easily connect Yiwu to Hangzhou and Shanghai.

Yiwu is located in central Zhejiang Province and is well-connected by air and high-speed rail. Approximate travel times to the city center (around the International Trade City or Xiuhu Square) are:

• From Hangzhou: 30-40 min by high-speed train to Yiwu Station, then 20-30 min by bus/taxi to the center.
• From Shanghai: 1.5 hours by high-speed train to Yiwu Station, then 20-30 min to the center.
• From Jinhua: 57 min by Jinyidong Rail Transit to the International Trade City Station.
• From Yiwu Airport: 15-30 min by taxi to the center (approx. ¥40-50).
• From Yiwu Railway Station: 20 min by taxi to the core area of the trade market.

Yiwu Railway Station is a major high-speed rail hub in East China, connecting Hangzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, and other cities.

To get here from within the city, you can take numerous local bus routes, including K1, K9, K12, K18, 22, 201, 202, 311, 312, 313, 315, 316, 138, 319, 321, 322, 323, 325, 326, 327, 331, 332, 333, 352, 390, 405, 803, 818, Y101, K121, and K122. Bus route 803 also connects the railway station directly to this terminal.  

Although Yiwu does not have a traditional subway, the Jinyidong Rail Transit functions like one, connecting Jinhua, Yiwu, and Dongyang. The most useful part for tourists is that **Yiwu Railway Station** is the starting point of this line, allowing seamless underground transfers after getting off the high-speed train, making it very fast and avoiding traffic jams. Yiwu has a highly developed bus network. Fares are usually ¥1-2, and you can pay by scanning Alipay or WeChat.

Regular taxi You can easily find taxis at taxi stands near the airport, railway station, and the International Trade City. The taxi stand is usually clearly marked.

As of 2026, the basic fare for regular taxis in Yiwu is ¥8 for the first 2 km, with a surcharge of ¥2.5 per km after that. There is a 40% surcharge for the portion of a one-way trip exceeding 6 km. A night surcharge of 10% applies between 23:00 and 05:00. Waiting time is charged at ¥0.5 per minute after the first 2 minutes.

Call taxi / Ride-hailing If you need to reach a place that is difficult to access by public transport, you can use ride-hailing apps or call a taxi. DiDi is widely used in Yiwu and can be accessed through the DiDi app or Alipay mini-program.

  Fare: Usually free for the first hour, then roughly ¥1-2 per hour.

The town has a large market with quite a range of goods. There are few Western residents, but many from India, Pakistan, and the Middle East. Many do some sort of import/export business. Binwang market has cloth, clothing, furnishings. International Trade City and the Futian Market has many small commodities including housewares, jewellery, beads, gifts, religious and seasonal goods.
