Zalaegerszeg is the administrative centre of Zala County. The city was founded in 12th century, and has about 57,000 inhabitants (2019).

The area was already inhabited in the Upper Paleolithic, according to archaeological findings (the oldest ones in Zala county). Later, the area was inhabited by Celts. The first written mentions of the town are as Egerscug (1247) and Egerszeg (1293); the name means "alder-tree corner" and is probably a reference to the town's situation in the angle where two rivers meet.

After the fall of Kanizsa in 1600, its significance increased and it gradually became the centre of Zala County and officially had a county seat in the 18th century. The city's boom began in the 1920s; under the office of mayor Mátyás Czobor, nearly 40 new streets were opened, a new public cemetery, a charity house, a number of rental apartments were built, and the public hospital was expanded. In 1929, Zalaegerszeg became a city with county rights.

The city's development has accelerated in recent decades. In addition to traditional agriculture, industry, especially developments and services related to the automotive industry, is gaining an increasingly important role. Additionally, trade and the service sector are also significant. The city is also a regionally important transport hub: it is easily accessible by road and has a railway connection. Nearby is the ZalaZone Automotive Test Track, one of the most modern centres in Europe for the automotive industry and testing and it plays a significant economic role in the life of the city.

Volánbusz operates local buses in Zalaegerszeg. Tickets (in 2019): 250 Ft in advance, 340 Ft from driver. Passes (in 2019): 6400 Ft per month, 3200 Ft semimonthly.
