Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected wildlife area in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. It protects approximately 100 km² of lowland and submontane forest around the Afi Mountains and is an important refuge for endangered wildlife, including the Cross River gorilla, Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee, and drill.

The sanctuary is also known for its birdlife, mountain scenery, hiking opportunities and the nearby Drill Ranch, a wildlife rehabilitation and conservation project. Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary was established in May 2000 from part of the former Afi River Forest Reserve. It is managed by the Cross River State Forestry Commission, with conservation and research support from organisations including the Wildlife Conservation Society and Pandrillus.

The sanctuary covers lowland and submontane rainforest, with rocky mountain peaks reaching approximately 1,300 metres. Other wildlife found in the sanctuary includes red river hogs, bushbucks and several species of monkeys. The western side of the mountain also contains an important roost for migratory European barn swallows, which can number in the millions during the wintering season.

Afi Mountain has a humid tropical climate, with a distinct rainy season and a drier period during the year. The area receives heavy rainfall, with annual rainfall generally ranging from about 3,000 to 3,800 mm. The rainy season usually lasts from around March or April to September, while the drier season generally occurs from October to March.

Temperatures are generally warm throughout the year, although the mountainous terrain produces cooler conditions at higher elevations. During the rainy season, heavy rainfall can make roads and hiking trails difficult to use. Visitors planning to hike should be prepared for wet conditions and bring suitable rain gear and sturdy footwear.

Onions, beans, rice, salt and cooking oil may also be available locally. The nearest reliable fuel supplies are in Ikom or Obudu, so visitors travelling by car should stock up before going to the mountain.

Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary is a self-catering destination. Visitors should bring their own food and prepare their own meals during their stay. Cooking facilities, including basic cooking utensils, pots and pans, are available for visitors.

Some basic food supplies may be available in nearby villages, but visitors should not rely on local supplies and are advised to bring enough food for their stay.

Visitors to Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary should bring their own drinking water. Borehole water in the area is only semi-potable, so visitors are advised to bring bottled water or a suitable water-purification method.

Soft drinks and beer may be available in nearby villages, although refrigeration facilities are limited.

Camping is possible in the Afi Mountain area. Visitors can camp at the designated camping area, where basic facilities such as water, a shower and a latrine are available.

For camping elsewhere on the mountain, visitors should arrange their trip with a guide and carry suitable camping equipment, food and drinking water. A tent may be useful, although a mosquito net is also recommended.
