Bacnotan is a coastal town in La Union.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Bacnotan is one of the oldest towns in La Union, having been founded in 1599 between the estuaries of the Baroro and Maragayap Rivers. It is a primarily agrarian and tourist oriented town, and an alternative beach hub for those who think neighboring San Juan has become too crowded.
Get in
[edit | edit source]Bacnotan is along Route 2 (Manila North Road). Buses heading to Candon, Vigan and Laoag also ply this highway. However, the route bypasses Bacnotan’s coastal barangays and goes inland to downtown Balaoan. Instead, beachgoing travelers enter through a junction in downtown Bacnotan leading northwest to Balaoan-Luna-Bacnotan Road.
A junction in downtown Bacnotan leads southeast towards the municipality of San Gabriel.

[edit | edit source]- 1 Saint Michael the Archangel Parish Church (Bacnotan Church), Guerrero Avenue corner Gabaldon Street, Raois. Bacnotan's main Roman Catholic church, built in a combined Baroque and neoclassical style during the Spanish era in 1819.
- 2 Zim-sim-og Twin Falls, Arosip. A twin cascade facing each other on opposite sides of the Maragayap River with a height of 20 feet (6.1 m) and a basin pool with a depth of 8–9 feet (2.4–2.7 m). It is named after a Kankanaey term to describe the sound of rock crashing against each other.
- 3 Sapilang Falls, Sapilang. A cascade located within the sprawling forested compound of the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - North La Union Campus. entry permission required from university officials.
- 4 Bussaoit Lake, Bussaoit. A man-made reservoir used for irrigation purposes.
- 5 Saint Joseph the Worker Parish Church, Balaoan-Luna-Bacnotan Road, Quirino, andynatividad@icloud.com. A post-modern Roman Catholic church design by national artist for architecture Leandro Locsin in 1956.
