Chereponi

Chereponi is the capital of Chereponi District in the North East Region of the Ghanaian Northern Plains. It sits on the Ghana-Togo border in the far northeast corner of the country, serving as a remote border market town for Chokosi (Anufo), Konkomba, and Togolese traders. It’s known for its international border market, traditional Chokosi chieftaincy, and as a gateway to Togo’s Savanes Region.

Chereponi was a centre of the Chokosi (Anufo) people who migrated from Ivory Coast in the 18th century. The area sits at the intersection of Ghana and Togo, and was divided by colonial borders — Chereponi on the Ghana side, Mango and other Chokosi towns on the Togo side. It became a district capital in 2008.

Main groups are Chokosi (Anufo) who are the traditional owners, plus Konkomba, Dagomba, and Bimoba. Anufo, Konkomba, and Hausa are widely spoken in the market. English is spoken by officials and teachers. Islam and Christianity both present, with strong traditional beliefs.

Hot, semi-arid Guinea savanna.

• Dry season (November -March): Very hot, harmattan dusty, 32-42°C.
• Rainy season (April -October): Short rains, roads become very difficult especially near the border lowlands.
• Best time to visit: October-February when roads are passable and market is busiest.

Flat to gently rolling savanna, scattered shea and baobab, farmland of yams, maize, and soybeans. The border is marked by small streams and farmland — no fence.

It is a very small town. Everything is along the main road to the border market, lorry station, district assembly, and guesthouses within 10 min walk. The Togo border is 1-2 km east of town centre.

From Tamale: Tamale → Yendi → Saboba → Chereponi. About 7-9 hours in dry season, can be 10-12+ in rainy season. Last stretch Saboba-Chereponi is unpaved and rough. Shared taxis run from Saboba.

From Nakpanduri: Via Wenchiki, about 2-3 hours by motorbike/taxi in dry season, difficult in rains.

From Togo: Foot crossing to villages near Mango. You must clear Ghana Immigration in Chereponi and Togo immigration on other side. Bring passport / ECOWAS ID.

No airport. Closest is Tamale Airport TML  ^IATA.

• Motorbike / Yellow-yellow: Only reliable transport in and around town. GH₵5-20 within town.
• Walking: Best for town center.
• Shared taxi: Irregular to Saboba and Nakpanduri — go early morning to lorry station.

• Chereponi Border Market. The main attraction — a busy international market where Ghanaian and Togolese traders meet. Busiest on its 6-day cycle market day. Yams, livestock, second-hand clothes, and Togolese goods.

• Chokosi Chief’s Palace. Traditional palace of the Chereponi chief. Ask permission to visit, greet elders, dress modestly. Drum and dance groups sometimes perform on request.

• Togo border view — Walk to the border area east of town. Flat savanna landscape, cross-border farms, and friendly border officials.

• Market day experience — Best day to visit. Arrive early morning.
• Village walks — Hire a guide/motorbike to nearby Konkomba and Chokosi farming villages to see yam cultivation and shea processing.
• Cross-border trip If you have Togo visa (visa-free for ECOWAS), arrange a day trip to northern Togo villages.

• Yams: Major yam production area — yams piled high in season.
• Togolese Wax Prints: From traders crossing border.

Chop Bars near Market, Around market and lorry station. 11:00-20:00. Simple chop bars serving Tuo Zaafi (TZ) with ayoyo or groundnut soup, rice and stew. GH₵10-30. 

• Koko and Koose: Millet porridge and bean cakes for breakfast, 5-10 GHS.
• Grilled meat: Evening chinchinga kebabs.
• Wagashi: Fried Fulani cheese mornings.

Use only bottled/sachet water.

Pito and Tea Spots, Market area. Evenings. Morning tea/bread shops, evening pito bars with local millet beer and zomkom. GH₵5-15. 

• Water: Sachet/bottled water everywhere.
• Soft drinks: Coke, Fanta in shops.

• Mobile: MTN best, Telecel spotty. 3G/Edge mostly, 4G sometimes in the centre.
• Mobile Money: MTN MoMo agents in market.
• Electricity: Grid connected but outages common.
• Wi-Fi: None

• Very remote. Travel in daylight only. Road Saboba-Chereponi is bad in rainy season — use 4x4 or motorbike with experienced rider.
• This area has seen periodic Chokosi-Konkomba land disputes. Check the current situation locally before going — ask the district assembly or police.
• Border area — carry passport, respect immigration.
• Malaria risk — net and repellent essential. Nearest good hospital is in Saboba or Baptist Medical Center in Nalerigu.

• Saboba — 3-4 hr southwest, market town with better lodging.
• Nakpanduri — 2-3 hr northwest via dirt roads.
• Yendi — 5-6 hr southwest.
• Mango (Togo) — Across border into Togo’s Savanes Region (need passport/visa formalities).
• Tamale — 7-9 hr, regional hub with airport.
