Nakpanduri

Nakpanduri is a dramatic escarpment town in East Mamprusi Municipal in the Ghanaian Northern Plains of North East Region of Ghana. Perched on the Gambaga Escarpment close to the Togo border, it is famous for breathtaking cliff views, cool breezes, and its old German-British border history. The town sits above the Oti River plain and offers some of the best sunset views in northern Ghana.

History

Nakpanduri was an important village on the edge of the Mamprusi Kingdom and later a colonial border post. When Togo was German Togoland, the escarpment marked the boundary between British Gold Coast and German territory. Old border pillars and stories of colonial patrols remain.

People

Mainly Mamprusi and Konkomba, plus Bimoba. Mampruli, Konkomba, and Hausa spoken. English spoken by teachers and officials. Predominantly Muslim and traditional beliefs, with Christians as well.

Climate

Hot but slightly cooler than lowlands due to elevation (~450m) and constant wind on the scarp.

• Dry season (Nov-Mar): Hot, harmattan haze, 30-40°C, great visibility after harmattan clears.
• Rainy season (Apr-Oct): Green escarpment, occasional heavy showers, slippery cliff paths.
• Best time: October-February for clear skies and festivals.

Landscape

Steep escarpment dropping 200-300m to the plain below. On top: dry savanna plateau. Below: flat Oti River plain with farms extending into Togo. Baobab and shea trees cling to cliff edges.

Orientation

Town straddles the escarpment edge. Market and lorry station on plateau side, viewpoint and road down the cliff on the eastern edge. Small enough to walk in 15 min.

By car From Gambaga / Nalerigu: Shared taxi/motorbike, 1.5-2 hr east along dramatic escarpment road. Road is unpaved but graded, very scenic.

From Bunkpurugu: 45 min - 1 hr west.

From Chereponi: Via Wenchiki dirt road, 2-3 hr in dry season, difficult in rains.

From Togo: Small foot paths down escarpment into Togo. Formal border crossing is further south. Carry passport.

Nearest airport is Tamale Airport TML  ^IATA.

• Walking: Best way — town to viewpoint is 5-10 min.
• Motorbike: For trips to villages below escarpment or to Bunkpurugu. GH₵10-30.
• No taxis — use motorbikes.

• Nakpanduri Escarpment viewpoint. Main attraction. Northern and eastern edge of town. At sunset, watch the sun drop over the Togo plains. Bring a flashlight for walk back. Stay away from crumbly edge.
• Old colonial border remains. German/British boundary pillars and old trade path down the scarp. Ask elders for stories.
• Nakpanduri Market. Small daily market, busiest on 6-day market day with traders from lowland Konkomba villages and Bunkpurugu.
• Oti Plain from above. View villages and farms below — you can see for dozens of kilometers on clear days.

• Escarpment hike — With guide, hike partway down the old footpath into the plain (1-2 hrs down, 2-3 hrs up). Tough, bring water, hat, boots.
• Sunrise / Sunset — Photographers love this spot.
• Village visits — Motorbike to Konkomba villages at foot of escarpment to see traditional farming.

Nakpanduri Market, Center of town. Daily, busiest early morning on 6-day market day. Small market selling yams, millet, groundnuts, shea butter, livestock, and household goods. Very local, cash only. (updated Aug 2026)

• Basketry — Simple straw hats and mats.

Chop bars, Near market/lorry station. 11AM-7PM. Very basic chop bars — TZ with okra/ayoyo soup, rice and stew when available. GH₵10-25. (updated Aug 2026)

• Koko and Koose: Morning porridge and bean cakes.
• Grilled meat: Evening kebabs.
• Bring snacks from Nalerigu/Bunkpurugu — limited options here.

Tea and Pito Spots, Market area. Morning and evening. Tea/bread spots in morning, pito bars evening. GH₵5-15. (updated Aug 2026)

• Water: Sachet/bottled.
• Zomkom: Local millet drink.

Nakpanduri Guesthouse, Near market, escarpment side. Extremely basic guesthouse — fan if power, net, bucket bath. Power intermittent. Bring power bank, towel, sleeping sheet. Ask for room with escarpment view. GH₵50-120. (updated Aug 2026)

Better lodging in Bunkpurugu (30-45 min) or Nalerigu (1.5-2 hrs).

• Mobile: MTN coverage best but patchy on cliff edge. Telecel weaker. Mostly 3G/Edge.
• Mobile Money: MTN MoMo at market.
• Electricity: Grid but frequent outages, especially during storms.
• Wi-Fi: None

• Escarpment edge is dangerous — crumbly sandstone, no rails. Stay back, especially with children.
• Travel in daylight only. Road from Gambaga/Nalerigu is isolated.
• Malaria risk — use net, repellent.
• Carry water and sun protection — windy but strong sun.
• Nearest good hospital is Baptist Medical Center in Nalerigu.

• Gambaga and Nalerigu — 1.5-2 hr west along scenic escarpment.
• Bunkpurugu — 45 min-1 hr west, district capital with more services.
• Chereponi — 2-3 hr southeast via rough roads, border town.
• Yendi and Tamale — Southwest, 5-8 hr depending on season.
