Bunkpurugu

Bunkpurugu is the capital of Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District in the Ghanaian Northern Plains region of Ghana. It's a busy market town just west of the Togo border and just below the Gambaga Escarpment, serving Bimoba, Mamprusi, and Konkomba communities. It functions as the commercial hub for this far corner of the North East Region, with a large market, lorry station, and better guesthouses than surrounding villages.

History. Bunkpurugu grew as a market center for the Bimoba people and surrounding Mamprusi communities. It became a district capital in 2004. Its location near the Togo border and below the Nakpanduri escarpment made it a natural collection point for yams, livestock, and imported goods.

People. Mainly Bimoba (the traditional owners), plus Mamprusi and Konkomba. Moar (Bimoba language), Mampruli, and Hausa are widely spoken in the market. English spoken by officials, teachers, health workers. Mix of Christianity, Islam, and traditional beliefs.

Climate. Hot semi-arid savanna.

• Dry season (November -March ): Very hot, dusty harmattan, 32-42°C.
• Rainy season (April-October): Short intense rains, green farms, roads muddy July-Sept.
• Best time: October-February when roads are good and market is busiest.

Landscape Flat to gently rolling savanna at the foot of the Gambaga Escarpment. Scattered baobab and shea, farmland of yams, millet, groundnuts, and soybeans. Nakpanduri escarpment rises sharply to the west.

Orientation. Linear town along the main road from Nalerigu to the Togo border. Market, lorry station, district assembly, and guesthouses all along or just off main road, walkable in 15-20 min.

By car. From Nalerigu / Gambaga: Shared taxi/motorbike, 1.5-2 hrs northeast via Nakpanduri. Road is unpaved but graded and scenic.

From Tamale: Tamale → Walewale → Nalerigu → Nakpanduri → Bunkpurugu. Total 5-7 hr in dry season.

From Togo: Small border crossing east of town to Togo villages. Formal immigration in Bunkpurugu. Bring passport/ECOWAS ID.

• Motorbike / Yellow-yellow: Main transport. 5-20 GHS within town.
• Shared taxi: To Nakpanduri, Nalerigu, and Chereponi.
• Walking: Town center is walkable.

• Bunkpurugu Market. Large 6-day periodic market — the biggest in this area. Traders from Togo, Nakpanduri, Chereponi, and Nalerigu. Best early morning 6AM-2PM. Livestock section is especially busy.

• Nakpanduri Escarpment Views. 45 min west, dramatic cliff views over Oti Plain into Togo. Easy day trip by motorbike.

• Bimoba Traditional Compounds — Around town, see traditional Bimoba architecture — round huts, walled compounds, granaries.

• Market day — Main thing to do. Go with a local guide who can explain produce and languages.
• Day trip to Nakpanduri — Hire motorbike for sunset over escarpment.
• Village walks — Guides can take you to nearby farms to see yam mounds and shea butter processing.

Bunkpurugu Market, Center of town, main road. Daily, busiest 6AM-3PM on 6-day market day. Biggest market in Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri. Yams (huge piles in season), maize, soybeans, livestock (goats, cattle, fowls), smoked fish, used clothes, Togolese goods, household items. Cash only, cedis and some CFA. (updated Aug 2026)

• Shea Butter: Raw, unrefined from women’s groups.
• Yams and Groundnuts: In bulk from farm gates.
• Smocks (Fugu): From local tailors, cheaper than Tamale.

Chop Bars near Market, Around market and lorry station. 11AM-8PM. Chop bars serving Tuo Zaafi (TZ) with ayoyo or groundnut soup, rice and stew, banku. GH₵10-35. (updated Aug 2026)

• Koko and Koose: Morning millet porridge and bean cakes, 5-10 GHS.
• Grilled meat: Chinchinga and grilled guinea fowl evenings near market.
• Wagashi: Fulani fried cheese mornings.

Bunkpurugu Guesthouses, Along main road near market and district assembly. Basic guesthouses — fan, mosquito net, private bath with bucket or running water when power. Better than Nakpanduri/Chereponi but still basic. Power intermittent, bring power bank and towel. GH₵80-200. (updated Aug 2026)

The best hotel options in the region remain to be the Baptist Medical Center area guesthouses in Nalerigu.
