Yunyoo

Yunyoo is the capital of Yunyoo-Nasuan District in the North East Region of Ghana. It is a remote, quiet farming town northeast of Nalerigu, home to Konkomba communities and serving as a new district capital. Few travellers come here, which makes it one of the most off-the-beaten-path district capitals in Ghana.

Yunyoo is traditionally Konkomba land. It was part of Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District until 2018 when Yunyoo-Nasuan was created as a separate district, with Yunyoo as capital. The area is predominantly agricultural and has seen gradual development of district assembly infrastructure.

Almost entirely Konkomba. Likpakpaln (Konkomba language) is main language, with Mampruli and Hausa in market, English spoken by teachers/officials. Mix of Christianity, traditional beliefs, and Islam.

Hot savanna, similar to Bunkpurugu.

• Dry season (Nov-Mar): Very hot, dusty harmattan, 32-42 °C.
• Rainy season (Apr-Sep): Farms green, roads difficult especially June-August.
• Best time: October-February.

Flat to gently undulating Guinea savanna, with farmland, fallow bush, and scattered shea and dawadawa trees. Very rural.

It is a tiny town. The district assembly, market, and lorry station are all within a 10-min walk along main dirt road.

From Nalerigu: Shared taxi/motorbike via Bunkpurugu road turnoff. 2-3 hr in dry season. Road is unpaved, rough, sandy.

From Bunkpurugu: 1.5-2.5 hr southwest.

From Tamale: Tamale → Nalerigu → Yunyoo, 6-8 hr dry season.

No public bus — early morning lorry station departure only. Nearest airport is Tamale Airport TML  ^IATA.

• Motorbike: Only practical transport. GH₵5-20 (Aug 2026) within town, more to villages.
• Walking: Town is tiny.
• No taxis outside motorbikes.

• Yunyoo Market. Small daily market, busier on 6-day market day. Very local — yams, maize, livestock, shea butter. No tourist souvenirs, authentic rural market.

• Konkomba Traditional Compounds — See classic Konkomba homesteads — scattered huts, granaries, livestock pens.

• Farmland Landscapes — Flat savanna with yam mounds, especially photogenic at start of rainy season.

• Village and farm walks — Hire a local guide to walk through farms, learn about yam, millet, and groundnut cultivation.
• Attend market day — Best cultural experience.
• Visit Nasuan — Nearby small town in same district, similar culture.

• Yunyoo Market, Center of town. Daily, busiest 06:00-13:00 on 6-day market day. Very local market — yams, maize, groundnuts, shea butter, small livestock, basic household goods. Cash only, Ghana cedis. No tourist shops. (updated Aug 2026)
• Shea Butter: Raw butter from women processors.
• Yams: Main crop, buy directly from farms in season.

• Chop Bars, Near market/lorry station. 11:00-18:00. Extremely basic chop bars — TZ with ayoyo or okra soup if available, sometimes rice and stew. Options very limited. GH₵10-25. (updated Aug 2026)
• Koko and Koose: Morning vendors if available.
• Bring snacks from Nalerigu or Bunkpurugu — supplies limited.
• Drink only bottled/sachet water.

• Local spots, Market area. Morning/evening. Tea/bread shops morning, pito bars evening when available. GH₵5-15. (updated Aug 2026)
• Water: Sachet/bottled — stock up in Bunkpurugu/Nalerigu.
• Zomkom: Sweet millet drink.

• Yunyoo Guesthouse, Near district assembly. Very basic guesthouse — bed, net, fan when power, bucket bath. Power unreliable. Bring sleeping sheet, towel, power bank, and padlock. Ask district assembly for best current room. GH₵50-120. (updated Aug 2026)

Most travellers base thenselves in Nalerigu or Bunkpurugu and visit as day trip if they have motorbike/4x4.

• Mobile: MTN patchy, often only 2G/3G. Telecel very weak. Expect no data in many spots.
• Mobile Money: MTN MoMo agent in market when network works.
• Electricity: Grid with frequent outages, some solar.
• Wi-Fi: None.

• Bunkpurugu — 1.5-2.5 hr northeast, bigger town with market and lodging.
• Nakpanduri — 2-3 hr west via Bunkpurugu.
• Nalerigu and Gambaga — 2-3 hr west, regional capital and historic town.
• Chereponi — Far southeast, difficult rough road, at least 4 hr.
• Tamale — 6-8 hr southwest.
