Dharmanagar

Dharmanagar (ধর্মনগর) is the second most populous city in Tripura.

Close to the Bangladeshi border, before the partition of India the town of Dharmanagar had strong ties to what is now the Sylhet Division.

Central Dharmanagar is compact enough for many short journeys on foot, particularly around the main market, Kalibari Road, Station Road and the railway-station area.

For longer trips within town, the most useful transport is:

• auto-rickshaws
• e-rickshaws
• shared autos
• taxis

Autos and e-rickshaws are normally easy to find near the railway station, markets and major road junctions. Agree on the fare before departure when no fixed tariff is displayed.

The railway station and bus facilities make Dharmanagar a useful transport base for the wider North Tripura region.

For excursions outside town, hiring a car or taxi provides considerably more flexibility.

Approximate excursions include:

• Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary — about 18 km
• Unakoti — about 18 km from Dharmanagar
• Jampui Hills — about 70 km
• Panisagar — useful for access to Rowa and onward travel in North Tripura

Shared vehicles are available on many regional routes, but frequencies become thinner away from the main towns.

For Jampui Hills, a hired vehicle is much more convenient for sightseeing than relying entirely on public transport. The mountain roads are winding and journeys take considerably longer than the straight-line distance suggests.

During the monsoon, allow extra time for rural journeys because heavy rain, potholes and localized flooding can slow traffic.

• 24.316692.06662 Unakoti (ঊনকোটি Ūnakoṭi). Historic site containing large and mysterious yet fascinating rock-cut and stone sculptures of Hindu deity Shiva.  (updated Aug 2025)

• Visit Kalibari Temple. Dharmanagar's principal Kali temple is one of the town's main religious and cultural landmarks. It becomes especially lively during Kali Puja and Durga Puja. Dress respectfully and avoid obstructing worshippers during ceremonies.

• Explore Dharmanagar's tea-growing countryside. Tea gardens are one of the attractions specifically associated with the Dharmanagar area. Ask locally about access before walking into a plantation, since tea estates are working agricultural properties rather than public parks.

• Make a trip to Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary. About 18 km from Dharmanagar near Panisagar, this compact 86-hectare sanctuary contains tropical forest and bamboo and is particularly suited to birdwatching, nature photography and quiet forest walks. Deer, langurs, monkeys and reptiles may also be encountered.

• Take a day trip to Unakoti. The monumental Shaiva rock carvings and reliefs at Unakoti are among Tripura's most important archaeological attractions. Dharmanagar is the nearest major railway hub and is about 18 km from the site.

• Spend a day or night in Jampui Hills. About 70 km from Dharmanagar, the hills offer cooler temperatures, panoramic views, Mizo villages and access to Betlingchhip, Tripura's highest summit. An overnight stay gives considerably more time than a rushed return trip.

• Visit Vanghmun. This hilltop Mizo village in the Jampui region is known for community tourism, local homestays, handicrafts and views across the surrounding hills.

• Walk through the markets. Dharmanagar is one of northern Tripura's main commercial centres, and the central markets provide a good introduction to everyday local life, produce and food.

Dharmanagar is the principal shopping centre of North Tripura and is a good place to stock up before travelling to Jampui Hills, Rowa or more remote villages.

The main commercial areas around the central bazaar, Kalibari Road and Station Road have:

• supermarkets and general stores
• pharmacies
• clothing shops
• mobile-phone shops
• banks and ATMs
• fruit and vegetable markets

Items associated with the wider region include:

• tea from North Tripura
• bamboo and cane products
• handloom textiles
• local spices
• seasonal fruit

Jampui Hills is particularly associated with oranges when they are in season, while village visits may provide opportunities to buy locally made bamboo products and other handicrafts.

For ordinary purchases, carrying some cash is useful even though UPI payments are increasingly common.

Buy water, snacks, medicine and other essentials in Dharmanagar before setting out for rural North Tripura.

Dharmanagar has a considerably wider selection of restaurants than most smaller towns in North Tripura.

Local food reflects both Bengali and Tripuri traditions.

Common Bengali choices include:

• rice and fish curry
• dal
• vegetable preparations
• chicken and mutton curry
• biryani
• paratha
• sweets

Traditional Tripuri dishes to look for include gudok, made with fermented fish, beans and potatoes; mosdeng serma, a spicy tomato chutney; wahan mosdeng, usually made with pork; kosoi bwtwi; and other combinations of pork, bamboo shoot, vegetables and berma (fermented fish).

• Swapna Momos, Kalibari Road, near Kali Dighir Par, Dharmanagar (Near the Power House Quarter area.). Generally around 4PM–9PM. Small, inexpensive specialist momo shop known for steamed momos, spicy chutney and soup. Mainly an evening stop rather than a full-service restaurant. ₹. (updated Sep 2026)

• Restaurant J.C. Plaza, DNV Road, near BSNL Office, Dharmanagar, ☏ +91 93621 41434. Generally 10AM–10PM. Casual family restaurant serving Indian, Chinese-style and local favourites. Fried rice and chicken dishes are among the commonly ordered meals. ₹₹. (updated Sep 2026)

Modern sit-down restaurant with Indian, Chinese-style and international dishes. Street snacks, tea stalls, sweets, momos and fast food are particularly easy to find around the bazaar and Kalibari Road.

Tea is the everyday drink in Dharmanagar and is available from inexpensive stalls throughout the town.

The surrounding district includes tea-growing areas, making a simple cup of local tea particularly appropriate here.

Other commonly available drinks include:

• lassi
• fruit juice
• soft drinks
• bottled water

Modern cafés have also appeared around College Road, Kalibari Road and the central commercial districts.

Carry bottled water when making excursions to Rowa, Unakoti or Jampui Hills, since reliable shops become less frequent outside larger settlements.

Do not drink untreated river or stream water.

Alcohol is sold through licensed outlets, but Dharmanagar has little conventional nightlife and is better suited to cafés, restaurants and quiet evenings than bar-hopping.

Dharmanagar is the most practical overnight base in North Tripura for travellers arriving by train or travelling onward toward Unakoti, Rowa and Jampui Hills.

Accommodation consists mainly of budget and mid-range hotels, guesthouses and the government tourism lodge.

Several additional budget hotels and guesthouses operate around DNV Road, Station Road and the central market.

If travelling specifically for Jampui Hills, consider spending at least one night in the hills rather than commuting back to Dharmanagar. Government and community accommodation is available around Vanghmun and Phuldungsei.

The area is prone is flash flooding during the monsoon season.

Mobile coverage is generally reliable within Dharmanagar, with the strongest service around the railway station, central market, College Road and other built-up areas.

Coverage becomes less dependable when travelling toward forested or hilly parts of North Tripura, particularly around Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary and the more remote parts of Jampui Hills. Download maps and save accommodation or driver contact details before leaving town.

Most hotels provide Wi-Fi, although speed and reliability vary. Public Wi-Fi should not be assumed.

Banks, ATMs and mobile-payment services are widely available in Dharmanagar. UPI is accepted by many shops and restaurants, but carrying some cash is useful for rural transport, small eateries and village purchases.
