Garešnica

Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Garešnica is a small town in the Moslavina region of Central Croatia, northeast of Kutina. Its main attractions are an 18th-century Baroque church and a visitor centre introducing the wetlands, fishponds and wildlife of the nearby Ilova valley.

Understand

[edit | edit source]

Garešnica lies in Bjelovar-Bilogora County, between the eastern slopes of Moslavačka gora and the lowlands around the Ilova River. The town itself had about 3,300 inhabitants in the 2021 census; its wider administrative area includes numerous surrounding villages.

The settlement appears in medieval records from 1257. It later formed part of the Military Frontier before returning to civilian administration in 1871. Today it is a local service centre for the surrounding agricultural countryside.

The nearby river landscape is known as Poilovlje. Parts of its wetlands and fishponds belong to the Natura 2000 ecological network. The visitor centre in town is a useful starting point for exploring this area.
