Grubišno Polje

St Joseph's Church and the town centre at night

Grubišno Polje is a small town in the southern Bilogora area of Central Croatia. Its attractions include historic churches, the nearby Bara recreation area and village heritage collections illustrating the lives of the region's Czech and Hungarian communities.

Understand

[edit | edit source]

Grubišno Polje lies in Bjelovar-Bilogora County, between the upper reaches of the Ilova and Česma rivers. The town proper had about 2,600 inhabitants in the 2021 census. Its wider administrative area includes surrounding villages, so accommodation or attractions advertised as being in Grubišno Polje may be outside the town itself.

The settlement was recorded as a market town in 1453. It was devastated during Ottoman expansion in the 16th century and later developed within the Habsburg Military Frontier. Farming, food production and the surrounding countryside remain important to the area.

Czech and Hungarian heritage can be explored through local associations, events and ethnographic collections in nearby villages.
