Ibeno

Ibeno is a town of 75,00 people (2006) in Akwa Ibom State. It is one of the largest fishing settlements on the Nigerian coast.

Ibeno is located in the south south of Nigeria and is a Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Ibeno town lies on the eastern side of the Kwa Ibo River about 3 km from the river mouth.

Located in the mangrove swamp forest, the area has rain throughout the year with the peak between May and September. The climatic condition in Ibeno is favourable all year round for fishing and farming.

Climate

Situated near the coast, Ibeno experiences a humid tropical climate with high rainfall levels and a distinct rainy season from April through October. The dry season lasts from November to March, and temperatures are fairly constant and warm.

Navigation within the main village grids of Upenekang (the local administrative headquarters) is done using local motorcycle taxis or tricycles (keke napeps). Once you cross the entry barriers onto Ibeno Beach itself, walking on foot across the flat sand flats is the primary method of travel, though quad bikes are available for fast beach runs.

The scenic geological confluence point where the freshwater Qua Iboe River flows out into the open salty Atlantic Ocean. It is heavily packed with traditional wooden fishing dhows and serves as an important ecological wetland sanctuary. Free to view; boat operators charge for tours.

It serves as a major hub for relaxation and photography. ₦200 standard gate entry fee.

• Fresh palm wine: Locally tapped from the abundant mangrove and raffia palm groves surrounding the estuaries, served sweet and ice-cold in calabashes.
• Standard commercial beers (such as Champion Beer, brewed locally in Akwa Ibom) and soft drinks are sold continuously out of large coolers anchored under the beach palapas.

• Network strengths: Due to the heavy commercial presence of major multinational energy corporations in the immediate area, mobile network coverage for MTN and Airtel is exceptionally strong, offering high-speed 4G LTE data connections right on the beachfront sand.
• Carry fully charged personal power banks, as public charging outlets are not available along the public sand stretches.

• Uyo – Head back north to explore the ultra-modern state capital, check out Ibom Plaza, tour the Ibibio Museum, or catch a match at the spectacular Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
• Oron – Travel northeast to visit the Oron Museum, which hosts some of the finest collections of ancestral wood carvings and traditional masquerade relics in West Africa.
