Visit Nordvestkysten is the official tourist information for the northwest coast of Jutland, and they administers a site specifically for the region of Thy.
The region of Thy is sparsely populated, but a few spots on the North Sea coast are popular with holidaymakers in the summer.
Thisted is the only larger town in the whole region. There are five other towns with more than 1,000 inhabitants in Thy (Hurup, Hanstholm, Klitmøller, Snedsted, and Nors), but they are all small towns with less than 3,000 people. Hanstholm is an important fishing town in Denmark.
Get in

By bus or car
[edit | edit source]Bus or car is the easiest way to reach Thisted. And it is also the easiest way to get around the Thy region.
The interregional road Primærrute 11 (Primary Route 11) connects Aalborg to the border with Germany by Thisted.
The interregional road Primærrute 26 (Primary Route 26) connects Hanstholm and Aarhus by Thisted. From Thisted the road leads southeast by the island of Mors, the Salling peninsula, and the town of Skive.
By train
[edit | edit source]Thisted is endstation for Thybanen (Thy Line) rail line, connecting south to the town of Struer. From Struer, there are several train options to reach other destinations in West Jutland and East Jutland.

By plane
[edit | edit source]Thisted has a small airport, but flights have been suspended. Nearest airports are now in Aalborg and Karup.
By bicycle
[edit | edit source]Reach Thisted by National Bicycle Route N12 from the Vilsundbroen Bridge in the south or from Fjerritslev in the northeast. The route actually starts out from Thisted itself, but it trace around the entire Limfjord coast and comes back to Thisted for a total distance of 630 km.
Get around

Walking is the best and easiest way to around in Thisted. The town is so small, that you don't need a car to go anywhere. If you want to get out of town to the nearby settlements, Klitmøller, Nørre Vorupør, Hanstholm, or the Thy National Park area, however, a bicycle, car, or public bus is a good choice.

Do
[edit | edit source]- 1 [dead link] Bus 88 (Thisted Station). Tue Thu Fri 09:45 in summer (week 27-32). All-day sightseeing in Thy, with 6 stops along the route. Different route on each weekday. 198 kr.
- 2 Thy National Park, Vesterhavsgade 168, Thisted (go to the small coastal village of Nr. Vorupør west of Thisted). The national park runs along the North Sea coast from Agger Tange in the south, to the lighthouse in Hanstholm in the north, and is bordered on the east by farmland. The park consists of wild dwarf shrubs, lakes, dune heath, and coastal limestone slopes. On the coast, ruins from World War II bunkers can be seen and experienced. Several types of birds, as well as rabbits, deer, and hedgehogs can be spotted. Since the early 2010s, wolves has made a home here. Go to National Park Center Thy - the main visitor centre in Nørre Vorupør - to get inspiration, and ask guides for good advice.

[edit | edit source]Because of the sparse population in Thy, it might be important to know where to shop for groceries and where you can refuel your car or motor vehicle.
Eat

- 3 Det Gamle Røgeri. Seafood restaurant. Has a small patio in the courtyard. 135 kr.
- 4 Den Gamle Slagter. Butcher shop with many interesting take-away options. Meats and sausages for your grill party. Solid ready-made dinners that you heat yourself, including several Danish specialities such as Biksemad, Gule Ærter, and Skipperlabskovs. Excellent sandwiches and a lot of different smørrebrød deals, perfect for a picnic.
Bakeries

Countryside

Traditional Danish fare for lunch, and three-course evening dinners. Sometimes special dining events such as Sunday all-you-can-eat smørrebrød lunch. You can also visit just for a beer or a cup of coffee. As other traditional inns in Denmark, you can stay at this place too.
- 7 Morup Mølle Kro, Morup Møllevej 71, Bedsted, info@morupmoellekro.dk. Open every day, year round. Another historic Danish countryside kro, this one with a history going back to the 1300s. The old mill is gone, but the location is the same as always, right at the stream of Hvidbjerg Å. As an oddity, Morup Mølle Kro serves a menu inspired by traditional British countryside food, with dishes such as ploughman's toast, Welsh rarebit, cottage pie, and of course a sumptuous Sunday roast. You can even have a Scotch Egg with you beer at the bar here. Book a table on-line. Morup Mølle Kro is well-worth a visit, also for the atmosphere and surrounding park as well, and as a typical Danish kro, you can stay overnight if you like.
Drink
[edit | edit source]Thisted is home to the Thisted Bryghus (brewery), an independent regional brewery, producing pilsners, porters and ales, as well as seasonal beers. Thisted Bryghus beers can be had on draft in local bars and their more unusual brews can be found bottled.

[edit | edit source]Thisted is the main town of the Thy region. Use the town as a base, or stock up on groceries on a stop over.
- Hanstholm - go to the fishing town of Hanstholm. On a bicycle, it takes about 1 ½ hour, and the best route is to go by Klitmøller and then north along the coast; there is a bikeway on the coast stretch.
- National Bicycle Route N12 (Limfjordsruten). Embark on an epic bike trip. This long distance route starts out from Thisted and goes around the entire Limfjord clockwise towards Han Herred and Aalborg in the northeast. The route returns to Thisted after 630 km all-in-all, and takes about 9 days at a regular pace, but can be cut short at several spots.
Klitmøller
[edit | edit source]Klitmøller is a small coastal settlement northwest of Thisted, and a popular surfspot, often referred to as "Cold Hawaii". By car it will take 20 minutes from Thisted, and on a bicycle about an hour.

Vorupør
[edit | edit source]Vorupør (or Nørre Vorupør) is a small coastal settlement a 25-minute drive west of Thisted and the gateway to the Thy National Park. You can bike there in about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Agger
[edit | edit source]Small coastal settlement in the south of Thy, where the Limfjord meets the North Sea. The commercial fishing harbour here is still active, landing oysters in particular.

This place hosts a two-day outdoor music festival every summer called Darling Festival. In 2027, it will take place on 13-14th of August.
- 13 Restaurant TRI, Vesterhavsvej 5a, Agger, info@restaurant-tri.com. Year round Th-Sa From 17:30 (more days in the summer). Unique gourmet restaurant, presenting local produce. Sometimes renowned guest chefs from around Denmark takes over the kitchen to vary the experience, check the website for specific events. This place is small and they don't rush tables, so book on-line in advance if you want to be sure. Be prepared to splurge.
