Visit Nordvestkysten is the official tourist information for the northwest coast of Jutland, and they administers a site specifically for the region of Thy.
The region of Thy is sparsely populated, but a few spots on the North Sea coast are popular with holidaymakers in the summer.
Thisted is the only larger town in the whole region. There are five other towns with more than 1,000 inhabitants in Thy (Hurup, Hanstholm, Klitmøller, Snedsted, and Nors), but they are all small towns with less than 3,000 people. Hanstholm is an important fishing town in Denmark.
Get in

By bus or car
[edit | edit source]Bus or car is the easiest way to reach Thisted. And it is also the easiest way to get around the Thy region.
The interregional road Primærrute 11 (Primary Route 11) connects Aalborg to the border with Germany by Thisted.
The interregional road Primærrute 26 (Primary Route 26) connects Hanstholm and Aarhus by Thisted. From Thisted the road leads southeast by the island of Mors, the Salling peninsula, and the town of Skive.
By train

Thisted is endstation for Thybanen (Thy Line) rail line, connecting south to the town of Struer. From Struer, there are several train options to reach other destinations in West Jutland and East Jutland.

By plane
[edit | edit source]Thisted has a small airport, but flights have been suspended. Nearest airports are now in Aalborg and Karup.
By bicycle
[edit | edit source]Reach Thisted by National Bicycle Route N12 from the Vilsundbroen Bridge in the south or from Fjerritslev in the northeast. The route actually starts out from Thisted itself, but it trace around the entire Limfjord coast and comes back to Thisted for a total distance of 630 km.
Get around

Walking
[edit | edit source]Walking is the best and easiest way to get around in Thisted. The town is not that big overall, and most of the attractions and action is concentrated in the old town center north and west of the harbour. The outlying neighbourhoods are residential or business and industrial areas; hardly of interest to tourists.
A fair part of the town center is pedestrianised and best experienced on foot. This is where most of Thisted's shops, cafés, eateries, and urban public space is found, attracting people from all around Thy.
By bicycle
[edit | edit source]You can certainly bike around Thisted, and also if you want to visit some of the nearby settlements such as Klitmøller, Nørre Vorupør, Hanstholm, or the Thy National Park area. Take note, though, that it will take one to two hours to reach these destinations, and most countryside roads does not have extra space for cyclists.
By car
[edit | edit source]If you want to get out of town to nearby settlements or other parts of Thy, a car is the best and most convenient choice. You can find many spots in Thisted to refuel, or get repairs, but be aware that this is not the situation in the countryside, so plan your trip in advance to steer clear of issues.
In the Thy region, you can only find car rentals in Thisted.

By bus
[edit | edit source]Public transport in Thisted, and the Thy region, is administered by Nordjyllands Trafikselskab (NT) that covers most of North Jutland. The company runs two local city buslines (TH1 and TH2) in the town itself, and several regional routes pass through Thisted while heading for other destinations around Thy.
The two city lines mostly serve travellers on weekdays in the daytime.
As in the rest of Denmark, you can plan your travels with the nationwide website (and app) Rejseplanen or go directly to the local website of Nordjyllands Trafikselskab.

- 1 Christiansgave Park. Public park in the town center. Parking lot, playground, and public toilets.
- 2 Thisted Lilleby, Plantagevej 20 (right next to the Chrisitansgave Park). Mon Thu 10:00-12:00 (the workshops). Miniature model of Thisted in the year 1950. The townhouses are packed away from October through March. Thisted Lilleby is run by volunteers and you can experience the workshops Mondays to Thursdays. There are 21 mini towns across Denmark. kr 30; kr 10 for kids 6 to 12 (Mobilepay 618585).
The central square of Store Torv is a public meeting spot and presents several attractions:
- 3 Thisted Museum, Jernbanegade 11, Thisted, ☏ +45 97 92 05 77. Open every day 11:00-16:00 (summer). Regional history and archaeological museum spanning thousands of years from the early Stone Age to modern times. The musuem is a regional attraction and is engaged in archaology and history research related to Thy specifically. Learn about Stone Age mining, ancient burials, Vikings, Medieval society, and the onset of industrialisation. Kids are more than welcome, and a whole room has been designed for kids specifically. Sometimes events. kr 80 (free for children under 18 years).
- 4 J. P. Jacobsen Museum, Jernbanegade 4 (just across from the Thisted Museum). Open when Thisted Museum is open. Birthplace and museum for the Danish poet and scientist J. P. Jacobsen (1847-1885). As a young man, he studied Botany at the University of Copenhagen and later translated the works of Charles Darwin. As a poet, J. P. Jacobsen introduced the literary genres of Modernism and Naturalism to a Danish audience. He died at the young age of 38 to tuberculosis, and although he wasn't a very productive writer, his work has found a broad international interest, inspiring literary giants like Rainer Maria Rilke and James Joyce no less, and his books have been translated to more than 30 languages. A ticket for Thisted Museum is needed.
- 5 Thisted Kirke, Vestergade 3 (right next to the old town hall and Thisted Museum). Beautiful old church at the central square and park of Store Torv. You can peak inside every weekday or attend a communal worship on Sundays.
- 6 The Old Town Hall (Det Ny Kastet), Store Torv 4, Thisted (at the Store Torv square next to the Thisted Museum). Thu Fri 14:00-17:00; Sat 11:00-13:30. Beautiful, listed and restored former town hall from 1853. The municipal administration has moved out many years ago, and the buidling is now an art gallery and home to the local art association Det Ny Kastet. Enjoy the building from the outside, or buy a ticket to the exhibits. The main focus of the gallery is on modern art by young people from the Nordic region, yet the changing exhibitions has a broad scope and also includes artists from across the world occasionally. From 14th October to 19th December 2026, works by British grafitti artist Richard Holmes is featured. kr 40 (free for people under 18 years).
Around Thy

- 7 Bunker Museum Hanstholm, Molevej 29, Hanstholm, ☏ +45 97 96 17 36. Open every day 10:00-17:00 (peak season June to August). Large engaging WWII museum fitted out in an old bunker system, part of the 'Atlantic Wall'; an immense German military defence network along the North Atlantic coasts of Europe. From this bunker battery in Hanstholm, the German Wehrmacht could repel an allied invasion and control a strategical important part of the North Sea, during the German occupation. The stronghold in Hanstholm was one of the largest German fortresses in Northern Europe, manned with a total of 90 soldiers and huge 38 centimetres (15 in) cannons. Special events every week. kr 110 (various discounts available and free for children under 18 if with an adult).
- 8 SMK Thy, Lille Fjordstræde 7, Hurup Thy (go to the Doverodde Harbour a couple of kilometres southeast of Hurup). 28th March to 18th October (check website for hours). Local department of Denmark's National Art Museum (SMK), presenting changing exhibitions. One of the regional highlights. Sometimes special events, usually on weekends. You can eat and dine at the on-site restaurant Centralen Thy, or just have coffee & cake. Naturlandsbyen is a nature centre in adjoining buildings. Here you can learn basic archery on Thursdays, or visit the open workshops of a busy vikingship shipyard on Tuesdays. The surrounding landscape invites for a nature stroll and there is a bathing pier nearby if you feel for a dip. kr 95 for the art galleries.
- 9 Kunsthal Thy, Boddum Bisgårdvej 2, Hurup Thy. Sat Sun 13:00-17:00. Changing art exhibitions with contemporary art, mostly sculpture, video, and installation art, presenting a broad range of both Danish and international artists. The exhibitions are located in the historic countryside manor of Boddum Bisgaard on the Limfjord coast opposite SMK Thy. kr 30-70 (pay what you want).
- 11 Dover Forest and Ydby Heath (Dover Plantage og Ydby Hede). Beautiful forest, hills, and heathland offering a good nature hike. The area holds no less than 49 ancient barrows from the Nordic Bronze Age. The forest is privately owned, but welcomes hikers along a trail marked with black arrows. Start out from the village of Ydby and walk east from there through the Dover forests, or drive directly to the 10 Ydby Heath where the barrows are located. There are parking lots both west and east of the heathland. A roundtrip of the heathland is just 1.7 kilometres, although it can be extended, while the forest hike is much longer.
The peninsula of Thyholm at the southern tip of the Thy region, forms part of the cross-regional and much larger UNESCO Geopark West Jutland.

- 12 Oddesundtårnet (go to the Oddesund bridge on the southern tip of Thy). Small lighthouse tower with a viewing platform and information on the Geopark, and the local peninsula in particular. Bring your own binocular for birdwatching. The surrounding beach meadows invites for a short nature hike. Free.
- 13 Regelbau 411, Hovedvejen 1, Thyholm (at the oddesund tower). Open every day 10:00-16:00. Small arts center fitted out in two WWII bunkers at the tip of Thyholm, presenting changing contemporary art installations. Free.
Thy has a thriving artist community, and many artists are welcoming visitors to their workshops or galleries. Here is a selection of small interesting visits around Thy:
- 14 Røde Ane Sculpture Park, Røde Anes Vej 8, Thisted (in the countryside west of Vilsund Vest). Private sculpture landscape park. Register on-line to get access, more information, event calendar, and guided tours. Free.
- 15 Galleri B, Lien 12, Vester Vandet (go to the small village of Vester Vandet at the Vandet Sø lake), ☏ +45 50 72 70 30, lblaabjerg@mail.dk. Sunday 11:00-15:00. Small art shop and gallery run by a local artist community. Ceramics, paintings, photography, flower-art, jewellery, and much more. You can order personal art pieces here. The gallery is open on Sundays, or you can call or write to make an appointment.
- 16 Galleri Salshus, Døjholtvej 15, Thisted (in the countryside north of Thisted), ☏ +45 24 84 63 05. Check the website (September and October: Fri Sun 11:00-17:00). Gallery and art shop in an old charming farmhouse since 1986. Paintings, ceramics, sculpture.

[edit | edit source]Things to do in Thisted:
- 1 Tilde Tut (Bytoget) (go to Store Torv). Thu Fri 14:00-17:00; Sat 10:00-13:00. Small tourist sightseeing train. Hop on at Store Torv and let the train conductor take you for a ride through the town center for 20 minutes. The sightseeing train is available Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in the summer, and on special occassions otherwise, depending on the weather. kr 20.
- Thisted town center events. Check Thisted's trade and commerce organisation's website and calendar for special events around the town center.
- 2 Plantagehuset, Plantagevej 18, Thisted. Communal house hosting several live music concerts every week. Check this website for current events. There is an on-site café Madværkstedet serving breakfast, lunch, coffee and cakes from 09:00-16:00 Tuesday to Friday. Plantagehuset is part of the larger KulturRummet culture centre.
- 3 Thisted Musikteater, Håndværkertorv 1, Thisted. Music, theatre, stand-up, talks, and other cultural events. Check the calendar to see if there is something for you.
- 4 Thy Indoor Golf, Vilhelmsborgvej 14, Thisted (in the business and industrial park on the east side of town). Open every day 06:00-23:00. Play golf in a large indoor simulator. Pay & Play: kr 150 per hour.
- 5 Thy Cablepark, Vibedalvej 20, Thisted (just east of Thy Camping), ☏ +45 52 61 24 23, info@thycablepark.dk. Tue Sun 12:00-18:00 (in the peak season of July). Cablepark with wakeboards and waterskis. Also kayaks and SUP boards for rent, including an experienced instructor. The harbour facilities includes public toilets. The cablepark is open from late April to mid October. In the height of summer, it is open every day, except Mondays, but always check the website for changes, if you want to be sure. The harbour area includes a bathing pier and a sandy beach stretch, which are both free to use. In the autumn and winter, from October through March, you can engage with winter bathing here, and buy access to a sauna. kr 350 (two hours incl. equipment).
Thy Hallen is a large sports complex north of the town center at the Thisted High School in the education district.
- 6 Thy Hallens Svømmecenter (Svømmecenter), Lerpyttervej 50, Thisted, ☏ +45 99 17 37 70, info@thyhallen.dk. Mon Thu 07:30-21:00; Fri 07:30-20:00; Sat Sun 08:45-16:15. Swimming facility with several pools, most of them inviting play with slides, toys, and springboards. Also wellness options with water massage, sauna, steam bath, and infrared light. If you bring kids here, note that you are required to surveil them at all times. Buy tickets on-line on the same day you are going. The reception desk sells swimwear. Car parks with charging stations. Day ticket kr 55 (kr 40 for kids aged 1 to 13).
- 7 Thisted Skatepark (Thy Skate), Lerpyttervej 50, Thisted (in the west section of the Thy Hall). Skatepark (outdoor and indoor) with many skateboard facilities. Rollerblades and scooters are also welcome. The indoor skatehall is only open in the autumn and winter from September to April. The local skateboarding community arrange Thy Open Skate tournament every summer. Free.
- Events. Go to Thy Hallen to watch a local game. Check the calendar. Thy Cup is an annual three-day handball meet in late December. Also other events (parties, stand-up, circus, hawker's market, etc.).
- Outdoor facilities. In association with the sports complex, you can find an outdoor beach volley court, a short MTB track, a parkour facility, and a picnic area with a firesite. They are free to use, ask the reception for details.
Elsewhere
[edit | edit source]Thy National Park is possibly the biggest and most notable attraction in Thy. The protection runs along the North Sea coast from the Agger Tange spit in the south, to the Hanstholm lighthouse in the north, covering about 20% of the Thy region. The landscapes consists of wide beaches, coastal dunes and limestone slopes, dune heath, wild dwarf shrubs and woodland, with small lakes scattered throughout. On the coast, ruins from World War II bunkers can be seen and experienced. An eldorado of birds, and wildlife such as deer, badger, fox, rabbit, hedgehog, otter, and seal can be spotted. Since the early 2010s, wolves have made a home here. The main gateway to Thy National Park is the visitor centre in Nørre Vorupør, a coastal settlement on the North Sea coast. Go there to get inspiration, and ask guides for good advice.
There are four towns and settlements in or at the Thy National Park. Hanstholm has its own wikivoyage page, while the three smaller settlements of Vorupør, Klitmøller, and Agger are described below. They are all worth a visit in the summer, or can serve as bases for exploring the national park specifically.
Vorupør
[edit | edit source]Small coastal settlement a 25-minute drive west of Thisted and the gateway to the Thy National Park. You can bike there from Thisted in about 1 hour 15 minutes.

- 19 Nordsø Akvariet, Vesterhavsgade 131, Vorupør (next to the National Park visitor center). Aquarium zoo showing the marine life of the North Sea. Watch when the sharks are fed or learn how to tie a real fisherman's knot. kr 75 (kr 45 for children).
- 20 Vorupør Museum, Vesterhavsgade 21, Nr. Vorupør. Tue Sun 13:00-16:00. Small museum on the local fishing culture and history of Vorupør. The museum is situated in an old shipbuilding workshop and is still building wooden ships. kr 50.
Klitmøller
[edit | edit source]Small coastal settlement northwest of Thisted, and a popular surfspot, often referred to as "Cold Hawaii". Klitmøller is about twice the size of Vorupør and swells with holidaymakers in the summer. By car it will take 20 minutes to reach from Thisted, and on a bicycle about an hour.

Agger
[edit | edit source]Small coastal settlement in the south of Thy, where the Limfjord meets the North Sea. The commercial fishing harbour here is still active, landing oysters in particular. Agger is the smallest of the Thy National Park settlements, about half the size of Vorupør, but as Vorupør and Klitmøller, it is also a popular spot for holidaymakers in the summer.

The kitchen serves fish & chips, burgers, and pizza, but also salad and moules frites. You can come just to eat. Live music most weeks with special menus, check the website, and book a table beforehand on concert nights, also for eating. This place also hosts a two-day outdoor music festival every summer called Darling Festival.
Østerild
[edit | edit source]Østerild is a village northeast of Thisted. The village itself is not that interesting to tourists, but northeast of town is the nature site of Østerild Plantation and the Østerild Wind Turbine Test Center. South of the village is the lake of Østerild Fjord, part of the much larger bird protection known as Vejlerne, stretching east in to the adjacent region of Han Herred.
- 10 Østerild Klitplantage (immediately northeast of town). Beautiful forest and nature site inviting for hiking adventures. Four marked routes of which the longest is 6 km.
- 21 Østerild Visitor Center, Gl. Aalborgvej 5, Thisted (in the middle of Østerild plantation). Open every day year round 07:00-22:00. Visitor center for the Østerild Test Center, a huge test facility for some of the world's largest wind turbines. Gawk at the impressive wind turbines, learn how wind energy is harvested, play with wind tunnels, and climb the lookout tower. The visitor center is un-manned. Bring your own food, drinks can be bought from a vending machine. Charging station for your motor vehicle and free public toilets. Østerild Test Center is located in the middle of the Østerild Plantation. Free.
- 22 Vejlerne (south of Østerild). Bird watching tower overlooking the lakes of Østerild Fjord and Arup Vejle in the western parts of the much larger nature reserve of Vejlerne. Eurasian Spoonbills are plentiful here in the summer and there should be a good chance of spotting eagles year round. If you are in to fly fishing, the Østerild Fjord lake is known for its trout and pike. Vejlerne is the largest bird protection in Northern Europe and you can find the main visitor center further east in Han Herred. You can't drive all the way to the tower, but a hike or bicycle ride is also the most interesting way to experience the area.
Hurup Thy
[edit | edit source]Hurup Thy (or just Hurup) is the second largest town in all of Thy, with just about 2,600 residents. It is the main market town for the southern part of Thy, and is connected to the Thy Line railway. The swimming & wellness facility and Heltborg Museum are notable attractions, but other than that, there isn't much to see or do for tourists in Hurup Thy. However, the town might serve as a base for exploring the region or an important stop for grocery shopping, refuels, and auto repair.

- 11 Sydthy Kur & Svømmebad, Idrætsvej 5, Hurup Thy (go to the town of Hurup). Sydthy Svømmebad: Open every day; Sydthy Kurbad: 13:00-19:00 (regular ticket). Sydthy Svømmebad comprise indoor swimming pools, including many activities for kids, yet this place welcomes all ages. There are some attached wellness facilities here, but if you want wellness and spa exclusively, visit the Sydthy Kurbad spa buildings just next doors for much more of that. If you are an early bird, attend Morning Swim on Mondays or Thursdays from 05:30 to 08:00, which includes a light breakfast option. Every Wednesday evening (19:30 to 21:30) is Quiet Night, which includes dimmed lights, calm music, and aroma therapy.
Sydthy Kurbad is a spa and wellness facility in the same complex as the swimming pools. Special packages and sometimes wellness events such as Girls Night, Yoga Spa Day, or Spa After Dark. Be aware that only adults are allowed in here, while teenagers can come along on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with accompanying adults. Pre-order your personal experience on-line, including food at the on-site café if you like. - 23 Anlægget, J. C. Nyboevej 1, Hurup Thy (just across from the train station). Nice small town park worth a visit if you happens to be in Hurup.
- 24 Kunst Caféen Thy, Sundsvej 1, Hurup Thy. Closed Mondays and Saturdays (check the website for hours). Art shop, gallery, and café, presenting uniquas from local artists (paintings, ceramics, textiles, and photography). Sometimes you can watch artists work, or be creative yourself. The café sells lunch, coffee & cakes, and you are welcome just for that.
- 1 Hurup Slagter, Bredgade 165-167, Hurup Thy (go to the central high street of Bredgade near the train station). Closed Sundays. Big butcher shop with many local meat products. If you are going to cook your own food, try a large Meat Box with assorted meat for 10 meals (4 people each), or one of the smaller Grill Kits. Also various sausages, cold cuts, meat balls, fish cakes, medisterpølse, leverpostej, and a variety of smørrebrød and sandwhiches, perfect for a picnic. You can pre-order on-line and pick up at the store.
- 13 Store Torvedag, Bredgade (go to Bredgade). Every Monday in July is market day in the high street of Bredgade, attracting local businesses in and around Hurup. Pop-up stands, hawkers, music, and various entertainment.
- 2 Hurup Cykel- & Knallertcenter, Bredgade 74-76, Hurup Thy. Closed Sundays. Bicycle shop offering repairs.

- 25 Ashøje, Ashøjgade 47, Hurup Thy. Nice woodland hill a little west of town. Ashøje is the highest natural point in the southern part of Thy, and the lookout tower here presents beautiful views across the landscape. Great for a small nature stroll if you happen to be in the area anyway. See if you can spot the forest troll! A large wooden sculpture is hiding among the trees.The grove is used by the locals for several festivities and gatherings throughout the year, and is equipped with public toilets, picnic tables, and shelters, perfect for a snack under the beechwood canopy. The hill and area is named after an ancient barrow and has a deep history.
- 26 Heltborg Museum (in the countryside east of Hurup). Art and pre-history museum. kr 60 (free for children under 17).
Vestervig
[edit | edit source]Vestervig is an old village west of Hurup, and it used to be cultural and trade capital for the southern part of Thy before the railways came in 1882. The industrialisation gradually shifted the center to Hurup, but Vestervig presents several points of interest to tourists and is located on the Marguerite Route.
- 27 Thinghuset Jail & Art (Thinghus Fængselsmuseum), Klostergade 36, Vestervig (right across from the inn of Thinghuskroen). Sat Sun 13:00-16:00 (July to mid August: Wed Sun 11:00-16:00). Former jailhouse, now art gallery run by volunteers. Experience the old jail cells and dive into local history related to the former prison. The art gallery and shop presents the works of local artists and craftsmen with paintings, clothes, ceramics, and handicrafts. Coffee and cake. kr 50 (free for children under 15 years).
- 28 Klosterparken. Nice town park. You are welcome to gather from the fruit trees here.
- 29 Galleri Engen 5, ☏ +45 40 92 37 67. Wed Thu 15:00-17:00 or by appointment. Small art gallery presenting several artists from the Thy region, including the owner's own work. Raku ceramics is a speciality for this place and sometimes workshops are arranged. The house has a bed & breakfast as well. Free.
- 14 Skindbjerg Høje (Kjærgården). Landscape and beach hike presenting no less than ten ancient barrows. Start from the two barrows in the south of town and then hike west along field boundary strips towards the beach. You can extend with a beach hike all the way to Agger.
The countryside just north of the village, presents a cluster of cultural sights:
- 30 Vestervig Church, Klostergade 1, Vestervig (in the countryside north of town). Open for visits every day 07:00-21:00. Historic church, and the largest village church in the Nordic countries. Sometimes church concerts. There used to be a large associated monastery in the Middle Ages, but nothing remains. Free.
- 31 Æ Beeshus, Klostermøllevej 79. Tiny museum on local history. Mostly information boards and no artifacts. Learn about Vestervig's deep history, including the large former monastery of Vestervig Kloster. Free.
- 32 Vestervig Klostermølle, Klostermøllevej 77, Vestervig (west of Vestervig Church). Nice old restored wind mill from around 1860. The grain mill worked as such for a hundred years and is now a small historic point of interest. The mill is used for small events on occassion by locals, watch the website. Free.
Events in Thy
[edit | edit source]- 15 Thy Whiskey Festival, Gyrupvej 14, Snedsted. 12th of June (2027). Small annual niche festival on whiskey for one day in the summer. The festival is held at the THY Whiskey Distillery, but presents a broad range of whiskeys from Denmark and around the world. Learn about, taste, discuss, and participate in workshops on whiskey. You can eat and camp at the farm (autocamper and tents). kr 375 (extra ticket for tastings).
- 16 Vildsund Fair (Vildsund Marked) (go to the Vilsund Vest village at the Vilsund bridge). Horse and hawkers market in the village of Vilsund Vest for three days every year in July. The fair includes live music and various forms of entertainment for the whole family, attracting locals from all around Thy since 1871.
- 17 Landdistriktsfestival Østerild, Vesterbyvej 1, Østerild (go to the village Østerild northeast of Thisted). 2026: 4th and 5th September. Festival, including an agricultural and animal fair, for two days in September. The festival aims at connecting countryside and urban citizens of the region, inviting them to talk, discuss, and share views, experiences, businesses, and visions, yet gladly welcomes anyone interested. Livestock shows and competitions, machine talk and exhibits, lots of local produce and delicacies, music and entertainment, food and drinks; the festival has something for the whole familiy. Free.
- 18 Fisken På Disken (Hook & Cook Hanstholm) (go to the harbour in Hanstholm). Three-day fish festival for the whole familiy in Hanstholm every year in September. Learn, eat, and participate in fish and seafood events.
- 19 KANT Festival, Håndværker torv 1, Thisted. Annual three-day photo festival in Thisted on the first weekend of October. Buy your tickets on-line. kr 350 to 890.
- Cold Hawaii Games (Most events takes place in Klitmøller and Vorupør). 2026: 4th to 20th September. Sports festival throughout September, including surfing, cross-country running, yoga, gravel biking. Surfing has a center role.
Live music

- 20 Thy Rock, Winthersmøllevej 8C, Thisted. 25th and 27th June (2027). Two-day rock music festival, and the largest music event i Thy. From kr 1000 and up.
- 21 Alive Festival, Tingstrupvej 2, Thisted (go to the Christiansgave Park in Thisted). Small annual three-day festival i July. The festival presents live music, art, and a variety of engaging cultural events that aim at bringing people together. The 2027 festival will take place on 29th to 31st of July. kr 995.
- 22 Darling Festival, Krik Strandvej 112, Vestervig (go to the coastal village of Agger). 2027: 13th and 14th August. Another small music festival, this one in the fishing village of Agger for two days in August. kr 379-579.
Buy
[edit | edit source]Because of the sparse population in Thy, it might be important to know where to shop for groceries and where you can refuel your car or motor vehicle.
Thisted is by far the best shopping opportunity, attracting people from across the region. Most of the shops are located in the town center, west and north of the harbour front, including a handful of supermarkets. If you are not looking for something specifically, go to Store Torv and stroll around the pedestrianized parts; it's a nice walk in itself, and there are plenty of small shops, cafés, and eateries. Friday afternoon and Saturday morning are the busiest times of the week.

Shopping mall with six shops, including a supermarket and an eatery (café and restaurant). Underground car park for 220 cars with charging stations. You can park for an extended period here for a fee.
- 5 Søstrene Grene, Storegade 3A, Thisted (right across from the J.P. Jacobsen Center). Closed Sundays. Retail store with a maze layout and many odd items in all kinds of categories: home decor, kitchen utensils, gifting supplies, art tools and materials, toys, tea, snacks and candy. An interesting visit just for inspiration. Søstrene Grene started out in Aarhus in 1973 and now has brand stores all over Europe. The style has a focus on Scandinavian design and affordable prices, although Søstrene Grene is not a bargain retail. If you need a bargain retail, visit Normal just around the corner.
- 6 SuperBrugsen Thisted, Vestergade 15, Thisted. Mon Fri: 07:00-21:00; Sat Sun: 07:00-20:00. Supermarket with a large car park and fossil fuels.
- 7 Thisted Minibazar, Nytorv 8b (at the square of Nytorv in the town center). Open every day 11:00-19:00. Ethnic mini market of a Middle Eastern bend with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, including some exotic ones. Spices, herbs, pickles, bread, chillies, sweets, canned stuff. Also some Eastern European specialities.
- 8 Pinay Asian Shop, Frederiksgade 8A, Thisted. Ethnic store with a Southeast Asian focus. Rice, sauces, pickles, fresh Asian herbs, fruits, and vegetables.
- 9 Byens vin & ost, Skovgade 2, Thisted (in the high street area). Closed Sunday and Monday. Small speciality store with a large selection of top-notch cheese in particular, including many Danish cheeses. You can also find other Danish or Thy related food and drink specialities here, including beer, liquor, chocolate and candy.
- 10 Thy Kunsthåndværk, Frederiksgade 4A, Thisted (in the pedestrianised town center). Mon & Thu Fri: 11:00-17:00; Sat 10:00-13:00. Art and handicraft shop with a plethora of uniqas from local artists. Paintings, prints, ceramics, textiles, wood, glass, sculptures, jewellery. In addition to regular art pieces this place also sells craftworks such as clothes, baskets, trays, bowls, Christmas decorations, lamps, and what not. Everything here is unique, yet the price covers all ranges; from very cheap to very expensive.

Eat
[edit | edit source]Thy is a notable food producer in Scandinavia and have many local specialities on offer. Seafood, pork, beef, lamb, dairy, vegetables, berries, beer, liquor, aquavit, wine, juices, honey, ice cream, and even candy. Organic farming and products are plentiful. You can try some of this in restaurants around the region, or buy from a few speciality shops and sometimes producers themselves.
Many accommodations in the region does not offer all-inclusive stays, so you might have to look out for good places to eat if you are not planning on cooking yourself. Thisted has the highest density of eateries in Thy, but there are also many good ones around the region as well.

Also a regular café menu with good coffee, various cakes, bread, brunch, smoothies, milkshakes, and there is a sizeable selection of food and drink specialities from around Thy.

Sometimes evening food events. Take note that this place only serves for lunch, except for some food events. Centralen works as an on-site restaurant and café for the SMK THY art exhibitions, but the ambitious kitchen is worth a visit in itself. Car park with charging station.

Countryside inns worth a visit just for dining:
- 14 Morup Mølle Kro, Morup Møllevej 71, Bedsted, info@morupmoellekro.dk. Open every day, year round. Historic Danish countryside kro, with a history going back to the 1300s. The old mill and original buildings are long gone, but the location is the same as always, right at the stream of Hvidbjerg Å. As an oddity, Morup Mølle Kro serves a menu inspired by traditional British countryside food, with dishes such as ploughman's toast, Welsh rarebit, cottage pie, and of course a sumptuous Sunday roast. You can even have a Scotch Egg with your beer at the bar here. Book a table on-line. Morup Mølle Kro is well-worth a visit, also for the atmosphere and surrounding park as well, and as a typical Danish kro, you can stay overnight if you like.

Nice outside terrace. Stenbjerg Kro is a historic kro since 1790 right in the middle of Thy National Park and as a typical Danish kro, you can also stay at this place. (PS. The restaurant service has been limited for the 2026 season. You can still dine here, but please contact the place a few days in advance)

Thisted is home to Thisted Bryghus, an independent regional brewery, producing pilsners, porters and ales, as well as seasonal beers. Thisted Bryghus beers can be had on draft in local bars and their more unusual brews can be found bottled.

- Thylandia. Local microdistillery producing gins and aquavits from malt spirit and local ingredients from Thy such as gale, elderflower, rosehips, heather honey, and oak bark. Also other specialty liquors. Buy on-line.

- 2 Bleghule Vingård, Klitmøllervej 88, Bleghule (on the north side of Vandet Sø lake). Small winefarm and winery on the edge of Thy National Park. - 8 Hindsels (Hindsels Herregård), Hindselsvej 24, Thyholm (go to the northeast of the Thyholm peninsula). Historic countryside manor with a history going back to the earliest Medieval times. The manor's owners are still using the land for agricultural productions, but has refitted a large part of the buildings and rooms as a retreat with modern facilities. Rent an apartment here for a quiet stay far away from the city, or camp on the associated camp site. Two hour guided tours can be arranged. The apartments have access to basic amenities, including kitchen, fibernet WiFi, TV, and kid's toys, and are often used as work retreats, but not exclusively. Laundry service and breakfast option, but otherwise, you will have to cook your own food. The camp site has access to electricity and shared showers, fresh water, and rest rooms for a fee (kr 40 per day). Hindsels is situated right at the Limfjord. A kro (plural "kroer") signifies a traditional countryside inn in Denmark. As a concept, they have a long an interesting history, originally forming a nationwide network of royal lodging, with shelter, dining and fresh horses for the king and his entourage when travelling. Others emerged from village halls or old flour mills to support gatherings and festive celebrations for local rural communities, and many still serves as such. If you're looking for an all-inclusive stay in a countryside setting, a kro might be the right option for you, and the Thy Region has some interesting ones.

Go next
[edit | edit source]Thisted is the main town of the Thy region. Use the town as a base, or stock up on groceries on a stop over.
- Hanstholm - go to the fishing town of Hanstholm. On a bicycle, it takes about 1 ½ hour from Thisted, and the best route is to go by Klitmøller and then north along the coast; there is a bikeway on the coast stretch.
- National Bicycle Route N12 (Limfjordsruten). Embark on an epic bike trip. This long distance route starts out from Thisted and goes around the entire Limfjord clockwise towards Han Herred and Aalborg in the northeast. The route returns to Thisted after 630 km all-in-all, and takes about 9 days at a regular pace, but can be cut short at several spots.
