Kumbungu

Kumbungu is a community in the Volta Basin region of Ghana. Kumbungu is the capital town of Kumbungu district which was formed out of the old Tolon Kumbungu district.

Kumbungu district has a population of about 110,000 (2021).

• Public bus from Tamale or Accra offer cheap and safer transportation than the maniac private bus drivers. It takes 16 hours from Accra but 1 hour from Accra.
• Private car from any medium-sized town with driver is only about some few cedis.
• Taxi also plough the road but comes with different colours depending on the station in which you boarded.
• Richshaw (Yellow-Yellow) is the fastest means of transportation from Tamale
• Motor cycle can also serve as a means of transport to the place.

• Yellow-Yellow: It's a tricycle with spacious air seats that can take you to your destination.

• Taxi: Red and yellow branded saloon cars used for public and private transport.

• Kumbungu Naa Palace (Kumbungu Nayili), H27X+9V, Kumbungu. 9am-5pm. This is located in the center of Kumbungu, where cultural artifacts and heritage are still in their natural state, unadultrated. It is the traditional home for all Kumbungu chiefs. The palace still has its main hall roofed with thatch, and the outside is still the bare earth to preserve its original state from time in memorial even before the arrival of the ruling class of Dagbon. Kumbungu chief palace is the warrior booth of Dagbon, as it is known for the spiritual war bees, the limitless bows and arrows for archers and also their preservative Sambanlung (night long historical drumming and narratives of Dagbon heros) (updated Aug 2026)
