Tolon

Tolon is the district capital of the Tolon district in the Volta Basin region of Ghana. It was formed out of the old Tolon Kumbungu district in Ghana. The Tolon District has a population of 118,101 people (as per the 2021 census)

Tolon is 42 miles (25.7 km) away from Tamale. The primary language spoken there is Dagbani. It is the traditional military headquarters of the kingdom of Dagbon. The name "Tolon" originates from the Dagbani word Tolum, meaning "delegate". Oral history notes that a historical chief sent his son as a delegate to fight on his behalf; the son's extraordinary bravery earned him the title Tolon Naa (Chief of Tolon) from the Ya Na. the Natives

  • Public bus from Accra or Kumasi or Tamale offer cheap and safer transportation than the maniac private bus drivers. It takes 16 hours from Accra, 11 hours from Kumasi but 1 hour from Tamale.
  • Private car from any medium-sized town with driver is only about some few cedis.
  • Taxi also plough the road but comes with different colours depending on the station in which you boarded.
  • Richshaw (Yellow-Yellow) is the fastest means of transportation from Tamale
  • Motor cycle can also serve as a means of transport to the place.

1. Walking: You can walk freely to any place of your choice if it is not too far.

2. Bicycle: You can ride bicycle around Tolon on the road and the paths within town.

3. Motorcycle: You can also ride motorcycle around Tolon on the roads and the paths within town.

  • Tolon Naa's Palace. Traditional Dagbon palace — ask permission, greet elders. Best in morning.
  • Farming landscape — millet, maize, yam farms around, especially green Aug-Sept.
  • White Volta at Nawuni — 15km west, river crossing point and fishing area.
  • Visit farms — see traditional farming, Golinga irrigation dam 10km away.
  • Attend local market day — every 6 days.
  • Village walks to nearby communities like Nyankpala area.
