National Capital Region (India)

The National Capital Region (NCR or Delhi NCR) is a large metropolitan area surrounding New Delhi, the capital of India.

The National Capital Region is a rural-urban region, with a population of over 4,60,69,000, about one out of 28 people in India. As well as the cities and towns, the NCR contains ecologically sensitive areas like the Aravalli ridge, forests, wildlife and bird sanctuaries.

There are three airports serving Delhi as well as the whole NCR:

• Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL ^IATA), Delhi — main airport
• Noida International Airport (DXN ^IATA), Jewar — alternative airport
• Hindon Airport (HDO ^IATA), Ghaziabad — alternative domestic airport

The "Big Three" stations of Delhi NCR are:

• New Delhi  NR  Airport Express  2  (code: NDLS)
• Delhi Junction  NR  2  (code: DLI)
• Hazrat Nizamuddin  NR  8  DM  (code: NZM)

Other major stations include:

• Anand Vihar Terminal  NR  3/4  8  DM  (code: ANVT)
• Delhi Sarai Rohilla  NR  (code: DEE)

Namo Bharat, colloquially rapid rail, is an RRTS network operating between Delhi and other satellite towns. It is faster than the existing local trains. As of 2026, only the Delhi–Meerut  DM  stretch of the network is operational.

The trains have 2x2 seating arrangement with adequate legroom for the passengers and an overhead luggage rack. The aisles have grab handles and poles for standing passengers during the peak hours. They also have on-board Wi-Fi, a public announcement and display system, an infotainment display, a dynamic route map display and emergency communication facilities. Dedicated wheelchair spaces are also available.

There are three classes in Namo Bharat trains:

• Economy class — The ordinary class equipped with six doors, three on each side.
• Business class — The most expensive class equipped with four doors, two on each side.
• Women's class — Separate coach for women, similar to the metro.

The massive Delhi Metro network provides a cheap, quick, mostly hassle-free and air-conditioned way of zipping around the city, with outer sections covering the satellite towns in the NCR.

Besides, some satellite towns have their own metro systems:

• The Meerut Metro runs in parallel to the Delhi–Meerut RRTS line with more stops.
• The Noida Metro  Aqua  runs from Noida Sector 51 to Greater Noida Depot.
• The Rapid Metro Gurgaon runs from Sector 55-56 to Phase 3.

The Delhi Suburban Railway provides limited commuter services on Delhi NCR's railways, and the facilities are a far cry from the user-friendly metro stations. For the most part, the railway stations are inconveniently located. There is no passenger service on the Delhi Ring Railway outside rush hour.

• Agra — Although not part of Delhi NCR, the Mughal city is close enough for a short trip from Delhi.
