S'Archittu

S'Archittu is a coastal village in the Oristano province. The town takes its name from the natural rock arch (s'archittu in Sardinian) that dominates the cove immediately adjacent to the town. During the summer months, the arch is artificially lit after sunset, making it a popular tourist attraction.

S'Archittu esplanade

The arch can be reached on foot via a paved pedestrian path created in 2002 that follows the original route of the previous dirt path. During the summer months, the arch is artificially lit after sunset, making it a popular tourist attraction. Both young and old alike dive from it; in 2001, the rear section of the rock arch hosted the World High Diving Championships. Approximately 15 metres high, it is the result of marine erosion of an ancient cave formed by limestone, marl, and fossil deposits. Due to its uniqueness, it is protected by a decree of the Ministry of the Environment, Land, and Sea, designated "S'Archittu di Santa Caterina Natural Monument".

The city consisted of an acropolis (remains of the walls are visible) on the Corchinas hill and artisanal and residential neighbourhoods in the lowlands.
It became a municipality in the Flavian or Trajanic era and was a colony in the 3rd century.
The city must have had a public area on the Corchinas hill, perhaps the forum, from which some honorary inscriptions originate. Remains of a bathhouse in opus listatum are also visible, likely restored under Gratian, Valentinian, and Theodosius (379-383).
