Salaga

Salaga is the capital of East Gonja Municipal in the Volta Basin region of Ghana. Once one of the most important market towns in West Africa, it was the largest slave market in the region in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today it is a historic, predominantly Gonja town with a large market, old slave wells and cemeteries, and serves as a gateway between Tamale and the southern Volta Lake area.

History

Salaga's name comes from "Salgi" meaning "To get used to a place". In the 1700s-1800s it was a cosmopolitan trading center linking the Asante Kingdom in the south with Hausaland, Sokoto, and Timbuktu in the north. Kola nuts, gold, salt, cloth and slaves were traded here. The town was sacked in 1892 during the Gonja civil war (Kpembewura war) and never regained its former size, but its historic relics remain.

People

Predominantly Gonja, with Hausa, Dagomba, Konkomba, and Zongo communities. Gonja, Hausa, and Twi are widely spoken. English is spoken by officials. Islam is the dominant religion.

Climate

Hot Guinea savanna.

• Dry season (Nov-Mar): Very hot, harmattan haze, 30-40°C.
• Rainy season (Apr-Oct): Heavy showers, roads can be soft, landscape green.
• Best time to visit: November-February for festivals and easier travel.

Landscape

Low-lying savanna, scattered baobabs and shea trees. The town is flat, surrounded by farmland.

Orientation

Small but spread out. The main market, lorry station, and historic sites (Salaga Slave Market, wells) are all within 10- to 15-min walk or a short motorbike ride in the old town.

By car.

• From Tamale: Tro-tro or shared taxi to Salaga, 2-2.5 hr, paved road. GH₵50-80 (Aug 2026).
• From Kumasi: Via Ejura and Atebubu to Salaga, 6-8 hr.
• From Yeji: 2 hr by shared taxi, partly unpaved.

Closest major airport is Tamale Airport TML  ^IATA.

• Motorbike / Yellow-yellow: Main way around town. GH₵5-15 (Aug 2026).
• Shared taxi: For nearby villages.
• Walking: Center is walkable.

• Salaga Slave Market Site. The former market square where slaves were traded. Markers and oral history from guides. Ask for the local historian at the East Gonja Municipal Assembly.

• Salaga Slave Wells. Wells where slaves were washed before sale. About 500 m from the old market. Modest entrance, ask for guide.

• Salaga Slave Cemetery. Mass burial ground for slaves who died in transit.

• Salaga Central Mosque. Large mosque in town center, historic Zongo area

• Take a historical tour — Hire a local guide (GH₵10-20 + tip, Aug 2026) to walk you through the slave market, wells, cemetery, and old wells. Allow 2 hours.
• Visit Salaga Market — Busy daily market, biggest on market days. Good for kola, shea butter, smoked fish.
• Attend Damba Festival — Gonja Damba, usually Oct/Nov.

Salaga Market, Center of town. Daily, busiest 6AM-2PM. Major market for yams, maize, kola nuts, livestock, cloth, and household goods. Bargain and bring small cedi notes. (updated Aug 2026)

• Shea Butter: Raw, from women's groups.
• Smocks (Fugu): Gonja weavers.

Chop Bars near Market, Around market and lorry station. 10AM-9PM. TZ with ayoyo / groundnut soup, jollof rice, waakye. Simple but filling. GH₵10-40. (updated Aug 2026)

• Grilled meat: Suya/chinchinga evenings.

• Mobile: MTN is strongest, Telecel second. 4G in town center, 3G outside.
• Data: Buy bundles from vendors at market/lorry station.
• Mobile Money: MTN MoMo agents everywhere — cash-only town.
• Electricity: On national grid, outages common.
• Wi-Fi: No public Wi-Fi.

• Generally safe. Respect historic slave sites — ask before photos, dress modestly.
• Malaria risk — use repellent and net.
• Travel by day, especially on Yeji road in rainy season.
• Nearest referral hospital is in Tamale; there is a municipal hospital in town.

• Tamale — 2-2.5 hr north, regional hub.
• Yeji — 2 hr south, port town on Lake Volta with ferry to Makango.
• Buipe — 1-1.5 hr north-west, junction town.
• Kumasi — 6-8 hr south.
