Buipe

Buipe is a river port and junction town in Central Gonja District in the Savannah Region of the Volta Basin of Ghana. Sitting on the Black Volta River and on the main Tamale - Kumasi highway, it is famous for the Buipe Bridge, its inland port, shea butter factories, and as the gateway between northern and southern Ghana.

Buipe has long been a Gonja trading settlement on the Black Volta. Its modern importance comes from the bridge that carries the north-south highway over the river, and from its designation as an inland port with a shea processing plant and storage facilities for goods moving to Burkina Faso and beyond.

Predominantly Gonja, with Hausa, Dagomba, Konkomba, and Dagaaba traders. Gonja, Hausa, and Twi are widely spoken. English is used in schools and offices. Islam is dominant.

Hot Guinea savanna, slightly more humid because of the river.

• Dry season (November -March): Hot, harmattan, 30-40°C, river level low.
• Rainy season (April-October): Heavy rains, river swells, bridge area busy. July-Sept heaviest.
• Best time to visit: November-February — cooler, road easy, river views best.

Flat lowland with the Black Volta River cutting through. Floodplains, shea trees, and farmland.

Linear town along the highway. The bridge and river are at the southern edge, market and lorry station central, fuel stations and warehouses north.

From Tamale: Direct tro-tro or bus, 2-2.5 hr, paved. GH₵50-80 (Aug 2026).

From Kumasi: VIP or tro-tro to Tamale stops at Buipe, 6-7 hr.

From Damongo: 1-1.5 hr via Busunu, paved. GH₵30-50 (Aug 2026).

From Sawla: 2-2.5 hr, GH₵60-90 (Aug 2026).

From Salaga: 1-1.5 hr, GH₵30-50 (Aug 2026).

• Motorbike or Yellow-yellow: Main way around. GH₵5-15 (Aug 2026).
• Shared taxi or Tro-tro: Along highway.
• Walking:Town Centre is walkable, but bridge area is busy with trucks — so one need be careful.

• Buipe Bridge over Black Volta. The iconic long bridge marking the entry to northern Ghana. Great photo spot, but do not stop on bridge — view from riverbank.

• Black Volta River. River bank with fishing canoes and port activities. Best at sunset.

• Buipe Shea Processing Plant. Large factory processing shea nuts for export. View from outside; sometimes tours possible with prior permission from management.

• Buipe Market. Daily market, busiest on market days. Good for fish from the Volta, yams, and shea.

• River walk at sunset — Walk along riverbank, watch fishermen.
• Market tour — Morning visit for fresh fish, smoked fish, and shea.
• Truck spotting — Buipe is a town with big trucks— interesting to watch north-south cargo transit.

Buipe Mtre t, Center of town, near lorry station. Daily, peak 07:00-13:00. Market for fresh and smoked river fish, yams, maize, charcoal, and household goods. Lots of provisions shops for travelers. Bargain gently. (updated Aug 2026)

• Smoked Volta Fish: Speciality — fresh from Black Volta.
• Shea Butter: Raw and processed, good quality.
• Fuel and supplies: Many fuel stations — good place to top up before long northern stretches.

Highway Chop Bars, Along main Tamale-Kumasi highway. 10:00-22:00. Busy chop bars serving rice, TZ, fufu, banku, fried rice — catering to truck drivers. Look for busiest spots. GH₵10-50. (updated Aug 2026)

• Grilled Tilapia: From the river, evenings near bridge, GH₵20-50 (Aug 2026).
• Wagashi and Suya: Morning cheese, evening kebabs.

Buipe Guesthouses & Motels, Along highway north and south of bridge. Several basic to mid-range guesthouses catering to drivers. Fan or AC rooms, private bath. Power more reliable than smaller towns due to port, but still bring power bank. Ask to see room, check for net GH₵100-350. (updated Aug 2026)

• Mobile: MTN strongest, Telecel second, AT works. 4G on MTN in center.
• Data: Buy bundles at market or fuel stations.
• Mobile Money: MoMo agents everywhere.
• Electricity: National grid, more reliable than interior towns, but outages still happen.
• Wi-Fi: No public Wi-Fi, but some guesthouses have weak Wi-Fi.

• Tamale — 2-2.5 hr north, major hub with airport.
• Damongo — 1-1.5 hr north-west, Savannah Region capital and gateway to Mole National Park.
• Salaga — 1-1.5 hr south-east.
• Kumasi — 6-7 hr south.
• Sawla — 2-2.5 hr west.
