Sawla

Sawla is the capital of Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District in Ghanaian Northern Plains in the Savannah Region of Ghana. It is a busy road junction town where the Wa - Damongo - Tamale highway meets, making it the main transit hub for western Savannah. Most travellers pass through Sawla when going to Mole National Park, Wa, Bole, or Buipe.

Sawla grew as a market settlement of Gonja, Vagla, and Dagaaba farmers and traders. Its importance rose sharply when the Wa-Damongo road was paved, turning it from a village into the district capital and commercial hub for the Tuna-Kalba area. It remains a farming and trading town.

Mixed population: Gonja, Vagla, Dagaaba, Brifor, and Fulani. Vagla and Gonja are widely spoken, and Waale/Dagaare and Hausa are spoken in the market. English is spoken by officials and teachers. Islam and Christianity are present.

Hot Guinea savanna.

• Dry season (Nov-Mar): Hot, dusty harmattan, 30-40 °C.
• Rainy season (Apr-Oct): Heavy rains, especially Jul-Sep, feeder roads to Tuna/Kalba become muddy.
• Best time to visit: October-February for easy travel and wildlife trips to nearby Mole.

Flat to gently rolling savanna with shea, baobab, and farms. The town is linear along the main highway.

Very easy — everything is on or just off the main Wa-Damongo road. Market, lorry station, guesthouses, fuel stations all within a 10-min walk.

From Tamale: Via Damongo or Buipe, 4-5 hr. GH₵100-150 (Aug 2026).

From Buipe: 2-2.5 hr, GH₵60-90 (Aug 2026).

• Motorbike or Yellow-yellow: Main town transport. GH₵5-15 (Aug 2026).
• Tro-tro or Shared taxi: Constant vehicles to Wa, Damongo, Bole, Buipe.
• Walking: Town Centre is easily walkable.

• Sawla Market. Daily market, very busy on market days (6-day cycle). Good stop for provisions, yams, livestock, and used clothes.

• Tuna and Kalba Villages (Day trip). Traditional Vagla and Gonja villages west of Sawla. Ask for a guide and motorbike. See traditional architecture and shea processing.

• Use as base for Mole — Many travellers stays overnight in Sawla before early morning entry to Mole.
• Market walk — Morning is best for cultural photos and shea butter.
• Birding — Savanna birds around farms at sunrise.

• Sawla Market, Along main highway, centre of town. Daily, peak 07:00-14:00 on market day. Major transit market for yams, maize, groundnuts, shea nuts, charcoal, and livestock. Small shops sell provisions, phone credit, and fuel. Bargain and use small bills. (updated Aug 2026)
• Shea Butter: Raw butter in calabashes from women's groups.
• Smocks: Gonja/Dagaaba smocks from tailors.
• Fuel and Supplies: Last good place to stock water, snacks before Mole.

• Highway Chop Bars, Along main road near lorry station. 10:00-22:00. Busy chop bars serving TZ, rice and stew, waakye, fried rice, and banku for passing drivers. Quality varies — look for the busiest one. GH₵10-40. (updated Aug 2026)
• Koko and Koose: Morning porridge vendors, GH₵5-10 (Aug 2026).
• Grilled meat / Suya: Evenings along highway, GH₵10-30 (Aug 2026).
• Wagashi: Fried Fulani cheese, mornings.

• Roadside Spots, Main road. Evenings. Tea (ataya) shops, pito bars, zomkom, plus Coke, Fanta, Malta, bottled water everywhere. GH₵5-15. (updated Aug 2026)

• Sawla Guesthouses, Along main Wa-Damongo highway, near market. Basic but better than many small towns because of transit traffic. Fan rooms, bed net, private bath. Some have small generator. Bring power bank. Ask to see room first. GH₵80-250. (updated Aug 2026)

• Most travellers going to Mole National Park stay inside the park at Mole Motel for safari experience, but Sawla is a cheaper alternative.

• Mobile: MTN strongest, Telecel second, AT usable. 4G in centre on MTN, drops to 3G/Edge in villages.
• Data: Buy MTN bundles from market vendors.
• Mobile Money: MTN MoMo agents everywhere — cash-only town.
• Electricity: National grid, outages frequent especially in rainy season.
• Wi-Fi: No public Wi-Fi.

Sawla is a highway town — watch for fast traffic when crossing the road. It is generally safe, but keep valuables close to you in the market or lorry station.

There is a risk of malaria in Sawla so it is advised to use nets and mosquito repellent. The nearest good hospital is Sawla District Hospital; for serious cases go to Damongo or Wa.
