Tal Afar

Tal Afar is a city in Northwestern Iraq.

Tal Afar is a city of about 200,000 in Nineveh Governorate, northern Iraq, west of Mosul. It is one of the larger settlements in the region and is known for its long history, historic citadel and location between the plains of northern Iraq and the foothills of the Sinjar region. The city is surrounded by agricultural plains and is an important local centre for trade and services in western Nineveh.

The city's population has historically included Turkmen communities alongside other ethnic and religious groups. Tal Afar has traditionally been known for its strong local cultural identity, traditional food and agricultural economy.

Tal Afar suffered considerable damage and displacement during conflicts in Iraq, particularly those involving the Islamic State organization. Reconstruction and the return of residents have shaped much of the city's recent history.

Taxis and private vehicles are the main ways of getting around Tal Afar. Walking is practical in some central areas.

In the center of the city are found the remnants of an Ottoman Empire fortress or castle.
