Tamluk

Tamluk (তমলুক) is the headquarters of the Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal. Linked intricately with the historical port town of Tamralipta, the present town stands on the banks of the Rupnarayan River.

The Howrah-Mecheda-Tamluk line splits into two: one going to Haldia and the other going to Digha. It is off the main cross-country links, but it has fairly good local rail links. It is part of the Kolkata Suburban Railway system.

  • 22.290187.92571 Bargabhima Temple. Believed to be more than a thousand years old, it was sculpted by Lord Viswakarma. The temple holds an old icon of the Goddess ‘Tara’, another face of Goddess Kali. According to mythology, Devi Bargabhima was creator of Tamralipta, once a great port of ancient India. This temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Puranas say that the small finger of left feet of Parvati fell here when Lord Vishnu cut her sacred body into several pieces to make Lord Shiva quiet.   • Matangani Sahid Smarak. During the Quit India movement of 1942, Matangini Hazra became a martyr at Tamluk. Later, Mahatma Gandhi appreciated her bravery and titled her as ‘Birangana’. This monument is a homage to her by prime minister Indira Gandhi.
