First steps
[edit | edit source]1
[edit | edit source]1. Compare Wikipedia and Wikivoyage entries on Ansan (or another city of your choice) and tell me what are the key differeces you see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ansan vs https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Ansan 2. Make a constructive edit to Wikivoyage. Chose any article (maybe about your hometown or other place you know well) and see if there is some information that’s missing, or is obsolete/wrong, and improve the article.
2
[edit | edit source]Go to your Preferences->Gadgets. Enable to following tools: Syntax highlighter, ErrorHighlighter,
If you do not have the Visual Editor enabled and are editing in code (i.e. if you don’t see two edit buttons – edit and edit source) follow the instructions here: tinyurl.com/HANWIK1 Change Wikipedia to Wikivoyage as applicable
Compare Wikivoyage to other websites
[edit | edit source]In order to learn how to write a very good Wikivoyage article, let’s review their best examples
Go to https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Previous_Destinations_of_the_month which lists some of Wikivoyage best articles. Choose one (an entry about a particular location) and read it. Is it useful?
Now compare that entry to some other travel websites (Wikivoyage competitors) that you used in the past. What does Wikivoyage do better – and what does it do worse – compared to them?
And remember that unlike Wikipedia, Wikivoyage articles do not have references (footnotes). Do not add references to your Wikivoyage content.
Understanding talk page messages
[edit | edit source]See if you have gotten any Wikipedia or Wikivoyage messages since the beginning of the course. Did you get any from a real person (not automated/AI)? Did you reply? Should you reply?
Do you know where to ask for help in the Wikivoyage system? Can you find the place to ask for help?
Compare messages you and your friends got. What are they about? Are they useful / helpful? Are they polite? Are they easy or difficult to understand and why? Did you learn something from them? Did you reply to them?
Assignment 1: What feedback did you get from other wiki editors (not me)?
You have been editing wiki for a month. Check what feedback you got: did you get any talk page messages? Any notifications that are not automated (that came from real people)?
Next, review the history of articles you edited. Did anyone else edit them? What did they do? Did they leave edit summaries (explanations of their changes)?
After Assignment 1, you can do extra credit edits.
Adding a listing
[edit | edit source]Add a listing to a Wikivoyage page. See Wikivoyage:Listings for what is a listing and how to do so. Read also Wikivoyage:Where you can stick it for examples of what can be written about and where.
GPS coordinates are very important. You can get them from most online maps (see also Wikivoyage:How to use dynamic maps).
Please pay special attention to the following common errors:
- while you should add an address (street, building number, etc.) to your listing, do not repeat the city name. For example, if your listing is in Ansan, the address does not need to contain the city name.
- formatting of telephone numbers. Read Wikivoyage:Phone numbers on how to write them up. Remember to be consistent:
- a Chinese phone number, for example is +86 373-xxxxxxx, NOT +86 0373-xxxxxxx or +86 (0373) xxxxxxx . If you cannot tell the difference, read this carefully again.
- for Korea, remember that (as explained in the linked guideline): "phone numbers should always omit the "0" part of the area code, and phone numbers can always be dialed locally by omitting the area code, so there should be no dash between the area code and the rest of the number." A South Korean phone number, for example is +82 31-xxx-xxxx, NOT +82 031-xxx-xxxx or +82 (031) xxx-xxxx .
- time information (open hours): for articles about South Korea and China, please use the 24-hour clock to show times, e.g. 09:00-12:00 and 18:00-00:00.
- proce information: please show prices in this format (for Korea): ₩100 and not KRW 100, 100 won, or 100원, or (for China) ¥100 and not RMB 100, 100 yuan, or 100元.
- spelling - American English vs British? Please use American spelling (color, labor, traveled, realize, center, analog, program).
Events
[edit | edit source]In do section, you can list things such as festivals, concerts, etc. Add such an entry using the Template:Event.
Listing verification
[edit | edit source]We have to make sure the listing entries is free of errors and contains links to other databases.
Task one. Ensure that as many listings as possible have URLs to their official webpages. Check existing URLs; if these are broken, fix them (add working ones). Of course, not all places can have URLs (mountains, parks, etc, often don't). But others do. Remember to link official pages; see Wikivoyage:External links for some more info.
Task two. link the Wikidata page for the listing, if one exists. This field should only be used if a record for the specific location exists – for example, a link to the Wikidata record for the Raffles Hotel (Q1538837) would be appropriate, but for a listing of a particular McDonald restaurant, a link to the generic McDonald's company Wikidata page is not. How to find a Wikidata listing? Try the following:
- go to https://www.wikidata.org/ . Use its search to see if there is a listing - search not just in English, but also in Korean, Chinese or another relevant language.
- go to Korean or Chinese or other relevant Wikipedia and see if they have an article about that attraction. If they do, it likely has a Wikidata entry - check the toolbar on the right or left and see if there is a Wikidata link.
Important: to add a Wikidata link to the Wikivoyage listing, you need to locate and provide the "Q-code" from Wikidta. Ex. not "Raffles Hotel" but "Q1538837" (see https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1538837).
Maps
[edit | edit source]Read Wikivoyage:How to use dynamic maps and Wikivoyage:Dynamic maps Expedition
Starting a new page
[edit | edit source]Find a location (preferably a city, town or village) that is missing from Wikivoyage. Start a new page about it in your user sandbox using the templates at https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikivoyage:Article_skeleton_templates (use either one of the city templates for a city, or a region template for a county; DO not use other templates like districts, parks, airports, etc.) and DO NOT create a new page of a city district.
For example, if you want to write about a village or smaller town or city, add {{subst:smallcity skeleton}} to your new article (sandbox), then save the page. Make sure it has an introductory paragraph (see WV:LEAD) and is using the Template:IsPartOf code. Then add at least three listings to it, with GPS coordinates. Those listings should be for the see and/or do locations. You can add more listings there (or in other sections) for additional extra credit.
Next, add a map to it.
Then read Wikivoyage:Outline articles. Your article should move away from being just an outline format as quickly as possible. Try to expand it so it is at least a Wikivoyage:Usable articles.
If your new entry is not developed sufficiently, it may not be moved out of your sandbox.
How to write good descriptions for listings?
[edit | edit source]Activity: Today we will practice writing good descriptions for listings. Listings should have more than a name and address (GPS), they should tell visitors why they are cool to see – but they should not be adverts.
Wikivoyage should not be used as a tool for advertising or promotion. Information added to listings should be one that a neutral editor would agree is not promotional, just informative. Review your edits or other listings: are they neutral? Can you find promotional language on Wikivoyage and make it more neutral? See Wikivoyage:Don't tout for details. Also consider whether you add enough – or too much – information. Review Wikivoyage:Tone and consider whether you can improve your listings. Add or fix a description (or many). Make sure it is informative and not promotional.
Banners
[edit | edit source]At the top of all good Wikivoyage article, there is a banner-like image, called a banner.
Activity 1: Suggest a good banner (top image) for a Wikivoyage article that is missing one (perhaps your main project?). The image has to be on Wikimedia Commons. Suggest it at https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikivoyage:Banner_suggestions or edit the page directly if your image meets the requirements described on the linked page. Before adding a banner yourself, make sure that your image meets the requirements (the crop must have a width-to-height ratio of 7:1, and that the resulting cropped image must be at least 1800 pixels wide). If your image is not the right ratio, you can edit it in Photoshop or an online tool like https://croptool.toolforge.org/ and upload a new image to Commons, attributing (linking to) the old image.
Tips on using CropTool:
- Open existing source the file in Commons
- Select CropTool from the Tools panel on the left
- (The first time, you have to authorize the tool)
- Select Custom Aspect ratio: 7:1, press Preview
- Check the preview, select Upload as new file and type the new file name according to the above instructions
- Press Upload
- After successful upload, check the new file and add it to the appropriate category "Category:Wikivoyage banners of "
If you cannot find a good image, you can also upload a new image to Commons, but remember – only images you have taken yourself are allowed. You cannot copy (steal) an image from the Internet (unless it is on a free license already, which allows copying). 99.99% of content on the Internet is not freely licensed and it is illegal to copy it.
Tip: How to find a free picture on the Internet: tinyurl.com/HANWIK6
Reminder: If you want to change an existing banner, please start a discussion on the talk page of that article – do not change it yourself without a discussion first.
Understand
[edit | edit source]Make sure your article has the correct subsections under ‘Understand’:
Climate
[edit | edit source]Today we will add the climate subsection to an article. Look at Wikivoyage entries for Ansan or Beijing. Try to write a similar section for a place that is missing them. Copy and adjust the ‘Climate’ template (graph). You will need to find the climate data using government meteorological databases (ex. Korea Meteorological Administration).
History
[edit | edit source]Next, do you have a short ‘History’ subsection? What about the description of the districts (neighbourhoods) - it should be under 'Orientation' subsection. What other topics are covered under ‘Understand’? Look at Ansan, Beijing, Seoul, etc.
Do not make your sections too long. For example, Wikivoyage section on history should be shorter than that found on Wikipedia. One or two paragraphs summarizing key information will do.
Also, very important: don't make the sections boring (encyclopedic); they should be interesting. For example, no tourist cares about details of administrative division or exact population numbers... Also, make sure they are not too generic or marketing - see WV:TOUT. Again, to see how best understand section look, visit some Star_articles.
Sections
[edit | edit source]Read the https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/WV:Sections guideline. Check whether your article(s) have all the required sections. Add the missing ones and try to have at least one listing for each section.
Then review the guides at https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/WV:Mos
Subsections
[edit | edit source]Read the https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikivoyage:Avoid_long_lists . Look at articles such as your project or others. Try to create whatever groups makes sense to you, and create listings for entries by type, such as a =Museums= subsection.
AI
[edit | edit source]Today we will consider how to use (and when to be careful) with AI tools.
Assignment 1: Ask AI to write a Wikivoyage article about your group topic. Compare it to your current article or articles. What did the AI do a) better b) similar c) worse than your project? Can any parts of the AI output be used in your project?
If the AI answer is plain text, tell it to give you code and see if it works to generate listings, or climate table, or maps.
Important check: did the AI fabricate any information (inserted false information = hallucinations)? Did it invent non-existent attractions, restaurants, hotels? Did it confuse this location with another place nearby?
Did it get the wiki code right? Does it work? You can copy AI output to your sandbox and save it there to check safely.
Suggestions: if the AI input is missing content, tell AI do add it. For example, can AI find correct GPS coordinates? Addresses? URLs?
How about images? Can AI find good images from Wikimedia Commons to illustrate your article?
Final touches
[edit | edit source]As we are finishing our Wikivoyage segment, take a look at the best articles on Wikivoyage (the “star” articles) at https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Star_articles Can you identify some cool elements they have that you could add to your article?
Take a look at Wikivoyage Manual of Style at https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikivoyage:Manual_of_style Is there something useful there that you can use to improve your article?
Common errors
[edit | edit source]I recommend reading in particular the following guides: https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikivoyage:Foreign_words https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikivoyage:Avoid_long_lists https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikivoyage:External_links https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikivoyage:No_advice_from_Captain_Obvious https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikivoyage:Tone https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikivoyage:Goals_and_non-goals and https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikivoyage:Don%27t_tout
Can you apply some advice from those guides to improve your article?
Also – compare different AI tools (ChatGPT, Perplexity…)
Final review
[edit | edit source]For the final step, ask experienced Wikivoyage editors for feedback by 1) starting a discussion on the discussion page of your article (make sure to have an appropriate heading and a comment below it) and 2) linking it from here with a comment: "please review my article" or similar.
Please check for replies every few days (and before the final grading), address any issues raised (if you don't understand them, ask me for help) and after fixing them, reply to the people who reviewed your article telling them you fixed the issues raised. (Ping them by mentioning their name using the + button, see Wikivoyage:Echo).
Extra credit
[edit | edit source]Today extra credit activity: Wikivoyage, in addition to pages about places, has pages about customs such as https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Christmas_and_New_Year_travel , https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Chinese_New_Year . Can you improve them? Maybe create an entry for Chuseok, if you feel ambitious and want extra credit? Check Wikidata pages for those concepts (ex. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1090024 ). Can you add some relevant statements? Or how about uploading photos you took to Wikimedia Commons related to holidays? Make sure they are photos you took yourself, and categorize them properly. For example, Chuseok photos should be in https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Chuseok and Christmas, in https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Christmas Double points for XMAS
Is your Wikivoyage article complete? Checklist
