Wukro

Wukro is a town in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. It can be used as a base for exploring the rock-hewn churches of north-eastern Tigray.

Wukro is a town in the Tigray Region of northern Ethiopia. It lies along the main road between Mekele and Adwa and is known for its historic rock-hewn churches and the surrounding highland landscape. Wukro is located in a dry highland environment characterised by rocky hills, valleys and agricultural land. Farming and local trade are important to the surrounding communities. The town is particularly notable for its connection to Tigray's ancient Christian heritage. Several churches in and around Wukro were carved directly into rock, reflecting the region's distinctive religious architecture.

Wukro and the surrounding area have a long history associated with the ancient civilisations of northern Ethiopia. The wider Tigray region contains archaeological remains dating back many centuries. The town became an important settlement along the road connecting Mekele with the historic cities of Adwa and Axum. Wukro and the wider Tigray region were affected by the Tigray conflict that began in 2020. Travellers should check the current security and access situation before visiting historic sites.

Buses going between Adigrat and Mekele can drop passengers off at Wukro.

The town is small and walkable. Walking, taxis and local minibuses are the main ways to travel around Wukro. Private vehicles are useful for visiting attractions outside the town.
