Understand

[edit | edit source]

Aglipay was founded in 1950 and was named after Gregorio Aglipay, a Filipino nationalist and religious leader from Ilocos Norte who was said to have taken refuge in the town's caves during the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine-American War before breaking away from the Roman Catholic Church to establish the Philippine Independent Church (IFI, or Aglipayan Church) half a century before. Its population mostly consists of Ilocano settlers and a few Bugkalot (formerly known as Ilongot) tribes in its extensive sliver of territory extending south to the boundary with Kasibu in Nueva Vizcaya.
