Daboya

Daboya is the capital of North Gonja District in the Savannah Region of Ghana which is located in the Ghanaian Northern Plains. It is an ancient Gonja town on the White Volta River, historically famous across Ghana for its salt, handmade smocks (fugu), and as the site of the Daboya Weavers. It is a quiet, traditional town off the main highway, ideal for culture and river scenery.

Daboya is one of the oldest towns in Gonja, founded as part of the Gonja Kingdom of Naa Ndewura Jakpa. For centuries it was the main source of salt for northern Ghana — extracted from saline soils along the White Volta. It is also a historic center for fugu weaving and dyeing, supplying chiefs across Gonja and Dagbon.

Predominantly Gonja. Gonja (Ngbanye) is main language, with Hausa and English spoken in schools and offices. Islam is dominant. The locals are very traditional and welcoming.

• Dry season (Nov-Mar): Very hot, harmattan, 30-40°C. River low, salt extraction active.
• Rainy season (May-Oct): Green, river floods floodplain, feeder road from Tamale can be difficult July-Sept.
• Best time to visit: November-February — dry road, salt making and weaving in full activity.

Small town. Chief's palace, mosque, market, and river are all within a 15-min walk. Town is reached via a 25km feeder road off the Tamale-Buipe highway at Busunu junction.

From Tamale: Shared taxi to Busunu junction (1-1.5 hr), then taxi/motorbike to Daboya (30-45 min on feeder). Total 1.5-2.5 hr. Road is unpaved after Busunu — rough in rainy season.

From Damongo: Via Busunu junction, 1.5-2 hr.

From Buipe: Via Busunu, 1-1.5 hr.

A 4WD recommended in rainy season. No direct tro-tro to Daboya — you will change at Busunu.

The closest airport is Tamale Airport TML  ^IATA.

• Walking: Best way — town is small.
• Motorbike: To go to salt sites and river, GH₵10-20 (Aug 2026).
• Bicycle: Can be rented/borrowed via guesthouse.

• Daboya Salt Flats. Traditional salt making area along White Volta floodplain. Women scrape saline soil and filter water to produce salt. Very photogenic, ask permission and bring small dash.

• Daboya Weavers (Fugu Weavers). Compound of traditional weavers making Gonja smocks on narrow looms. You can watch weaving, dyeing with natural indigo. You can buy directly — better quality than market.

• White Volta River. Wide river with fishing canoes, birds, and sunset views. Do not swim — strong currents and bilharzia risk.

• Chief's Palace. Palace of the Daboya Chief (Daboyawura). Ask for permission to greet.

• Watch salt making — Go early morning with guide to see extraction.
• Visit weavers — Order a custom fugu smock (takes 1-2 days).
• River walk & birding — Morning/evening for kingfishers, herons, weavers.
• Visit nearby villages — Motorbike to Mankarigu area.

Daboya Market, Center of town. Daily, busiest mornings. Very small market for yams, maize, fish, and household goods. Main shopping is craft-based. (updated Aug 2026)

• Gonja Fugu (Smock): Hand-woven, best bought directly from weavers — GH₵200-500 (Aug 2026) depending on design.
• Daboya Salt: Locally produced, sold in small bags — good souvenir.
• Shea Butter: From women's groups.

Chop Bars, Near market. 11:00-20:00. Very basic chop bars — TZ with ayoyo/okra soup, rice and stew when available. Best to arrange food with guesthouse or bring snacks from Tamale. 10-30. (updated Aug 2026)

• Koko and Koose: Mornings from vendors.
• Wagashi: Fulani cheese mornings.

Bring bottled/sachet water and extra snacks.

Tea Spots, Market area. Mornings & evenings. Ataya tea shops — Lipton and bread. Pito and zomkom in evenings. Bottled water and soft drinks limited — buy in Busunu or Tamale. GH₵5-10. (updated Aug 2026)

Daboya Guesthouse, Near district assembly. Very basic district guesthouse — fan, bed net, bucket bath. Power from grid with frequent outages. Bring towel, power bank, mosquito coil. Some NGO lodges may be available — ask at District Assembly. GH₵80-150. (updated Aug 2026)

• Most visitors stay in Tamale or Damongo and do Daboya as day trip.

• Mobile: MTN only reliable network, weak Telecel. 3G/Edge mostly — 4G rare. Signal drops near river.
• Data: Buy bundle in Tamale or Busunu before entering.
• Mobile Money: One or two MTN MoMo agents — bring cash from Tamale.
• Electricity: National grid but outages very frequent. Power bank essential.
• Wi-Fi: No Wi-Fi.

• Very safe, traditional community. Dress modestly, greet elders, ask before photos — especially of weavers and salt makers.
• Do not swim in White Volta.
• Malaria risk — use net and repellent.
• Feeder road from Busunu can be impassable after heavy rain — travel by day, check conditions locally.
• Nearest hospital: Daboya Health Centre, referral to Tamale or Damongo.

• Tamale — 1.5-2.5 hr north-east, main hub with airport.
• Buipe — 1-1.5 hr south, river port and highway junction.
• Damongo — 1.5-2 hr west, capital of Savannah Region, gateway to Mole National Park.
• Salaga — 3-4 hr via Buipe.
