Talk:Kolkata/Bagbazar-Shyambazar-Sovabazar

Article name

[edit source]

I find the current name "Bagbazar-Shyambazar-Sovabazar" rather clumsy & off-putting. Policy is to use the commonest English name & I doubt this is it. Also, it seems incomplete; the title names three districts but the article mentions five: "comprises neighbourhoods like Bagbazar, Hatibagan, Kumortuli, Shyambazar, and Sovabaza" & "neighbourhoods like ..." appears to leave open the possibility of more.

The article has "Historically known as Sutanuti (সুতানুটি Sutānuṭi), this area is ,,,". I suggest we move the article to Kolkata/Sutanuti with redirects at Bagbazar & the others.

Yes, it is historically known as "Sutanuti", but it's just a historical name and not very common otherwise. Most people use "North Kolkata" to mean that area, with some using it to include Kolkata/Burrabazar-Jorasanko and Kolkata/Girish Park-Maniktala as well, once considered "Central Calcutta" before the expansion of the city southward. Kolkata/North is already a broad district that covers this subdistrict along with Kolkata/Burrabazar-Jorasanko, Kolkata/Cossipore-Belgachia and Kolkata/Girish Park-Maniktala.
One solution might be to narrow the definition of Kolkata/North to cover only this district, but that means the district breakup of Kolkata will be awkward, as the city is divided into North, Central, South and East, which are further divided into subdistricts.
That's why I have decided to name this part of North Kolkata based on three major neighbourhoods, even though it also includes a few others like Hatibagan and Kumortuli, the latter is undoubtedly famous outside the city for its Durga Puja pottery. Now, I have split that large district into three smaller districts based on one-two neighbourhoods: Kolkata/Bagbazar, Kolkata/Sovabazar-Kumartuli and Kolkata/Shyambazar-Hatibagan. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 16:05, 5 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Is "Sutanuti" sufficiently likely as a search term to make it worth either a redirect or a Wikivoyage:Extraregion article? Pashley (talk) 23:04, 5 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have mentioned Sutanuti at Kolkata/North, by the way. It's actually one of the three villages that merged to become Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1690; the other two being Kalikata and Gobindapur. Unlike Sutanuti, the other two place names aren't common enough as search terms, so they are only mentioned at Kolkata#History ("Kalikata" is just the archaic form of "Kolkata" in Bengali; and Gobindapur is wholly replaced by the Maidan area, which is too generic to be redirected there).
