I removed some babble about Corleone from this section, so unfortunately it now stands empty.

No one word about mafia...mafia threatens tourists as every Italian and Sicilian--151.30.34.101 15:03, 19 August 2008 (EDT)

The mafia threatens tourists? I thought they were busy running the place. I'm no expert on Sicily, but organized crime around the world usually poses little to no threat to tourists, unlike low-level street crime. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 20:13, 19 August 2008 (EDT)

Can the cities Noto (Unesco) and Taormina be added?

Alternative banner for this article?

[edit]
Banner currently used in this article
Suggested new alternative banner

I created a new alternative banner for this article (I initially created it first and foremost so that it would be used at the top of the parallel article in the Hebrew edition of Wikivoyage, yet I later decided to also suggest that the English Wikivoyage community would consider using it here as well). So, which banner do you prefer having at the top of this article? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 05:15, 11 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

I like the composition of the current banner better, and also the fact that it does not clearly show a particular city. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:41, 11 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Both are good, but I prefer the original because it is something people generally would not expect of Sicily, whereas pretty Mediterranean ports are a dime a dozen. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 06:52, 11 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
I prefer the original one, because it does not show any particular city, but Sicily landscape. Danapit (talk) 12:10, 11 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
I prefer the original. Looks more Sicilian. And it is more quiet, i.e., useful as a background for text Elgaard (talk) 23:22, 12 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Banner in WikiData and is found in other voyage wikis
Proposed banner I like slightly better... WikiData has Sicily banner Fruit stall.png listed by the way - Matroc (talk) 04:20, 30 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
The fruit stall is a nice idea, but that picture is in my opinion not nearly as good as either of the other banners. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:53, 30 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
I also like the idea of a 'slice of life' here, but ultimately nothing to suggest it is in Sicily. Also somewhat pedantic, but it is less than 2100 pixel minimum across that we recommend. Andrewssi2 (talk) 05:56, 30 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Agreed - I liked the proposed banner (Suggested new alternative banner). I just thought it might be a good idea to let you all know that Wikidata and other sites have something different banner altogether. - Matroc (talk) 07:50, 30 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Dirtiest part of Europe?

[edit]

I am taking a family holiday in Sicily. As usual, the information here has been very useful. One of the biggest disappointments though is the amount of litter/rubbish that fills the streets of the major cities and along every country lane. Clearly there has been no effort at litter collection here. And the locals must regard any area as suitable for discarding rubbish bags. I travel the world and I do not think I have been anywhere quite so dirty (not even Afghanistan or Bangladesh). It would be good to get some other comments. Assuming there is agreement, I think this information needs to go into the main page.Davidbstanley (talk) 08:11, 5 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Cheap flights?

There are a number of unnecessary lat/long links on the main page, I feel like these should be removed. unsigned comment by user:Oxidising, 8 Feb 2023

@Oxidising: if you mean the strings of "0°0'0"N...", that is a problem occurring across Wikimedia sites. It has been brought to the attention of the Wikimedia programmers, who are working on a solution. Ground Zero (talk) 12:23, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that's the problem the programmers are working to resolve. Ground Zero (talk) 12:58, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Expanding UNESCO site info in “Other destinations” section

[edit]

I noticed that the “Other destinations” section currently highlights Val di Noto as a UNESCO site, which is great, but it's the only one listed, even though Sicily has several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, both cultural and natural.

Would it make sense to include the full set, or at least add a short note indicating that there are other UNESCO sites across the island (e.g. Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples, Villa Romana del Casale, Arab-Norman Palermo, Mount Etna, etc.)?

We could either:

  • Add markers or brief mentions for the others (especially those not already covered), or
  • Add a sentence like: “Sicily has several UNESCO World Heritage Sites beyond Val di Noto, including archaeological, architectural, and natural landmarks across the island.

To help visualise what could be added, here's a table of the current UNESCO-listed sites in Sicily:

Name Type Year Location
Valley of the Temples (Agrigento) Cultural 1997 Agrigento, Southern Sicily
Villa Romana del Casale Cultural 1997 Piazza Armerina, Central Sicily
Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto Cultural 2002 Southeastern Sicily (Caltagirone, Militello, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa, Scicli)
Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica Cultural 2005 Syracuse & Pantalica, Southeastern Sicily
Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale Cultural 2015 Palermo, Cefalù, Monreale (Northwest Sicily)
Mount Etna Natural 2013 Eastern Sicily
Traditional Agricultural Practices of Pantelleria Cultural Landscape 2014 Pantelleria Island

Kned Wiki (talk) 08:45, 14 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

That's not too long, but there are only supposed to be no more than 9 "Other destinations" in total in non-bottom region articles per 7+2, and there are already 14, so 5 would need to be removed already! What are your thoughts about which 9 to list? Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:53, 14 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Some thoughts, even though I'm not that familiar with Sicily: Mount Etna should definitely be listed, as it's one of Europe's very few active volcanoes and it's apparently really impressive to visit. World heritage sites that are cities (Palermo, Catania, Siracusa etc.) should go in the Cities section. However if a very notable attraction happens to be next to a small town/village which in itself is uninteresting we could list it in Other destinations. One more thing, the world heritage sites can be described further in the See section of the article, which as of now hardly has any content. --Ypsilon (talk) 09:21, 14 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm… it's tricky.
I think a possible approach would be to create a new section for “Nature” or “Protected Areas”, where the national parks (Mount Etna and Pantelleria) could go, along with the various reserves like Zingaro, Madonie, Stagnone, and Monte Cofano. That would free up the “Other destinations” section to focus on stand-alone islands (like the Aegadian and Aeolian Islands) and major archaeological sites.
Personally, I think the 'Valley of the Temples' deserves its own article, rather than just being folded into Agrigento. Perhaps some of the UNESCO sites that include multiple locations (Val di Noto, Arab-Norman Palermo etc.) could also have their own pages? Kned Wiki (talk) 09:33, 14 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I feel like your judgment about what merits an article has been good so far and would tend to defer to you on that. Not to ignore the obvious: have you read Wikivoyage:What is an article? Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:49, 14 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
In the short term, I think perhaps Ypsilon's suggestion is good: expand the 'See' and 'Do' sections, which currently have little content. 'See' might list the archaeological and UNESCO sites and 'Do' could list all the nature reserves/parks. I'll try them out in a sandbox. Kned Wiki (talk) 10:03, 14 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I've done a bit of analysis, and since it's difficult to find consistent statistics on tourist numbers for all destinations in Sicily, I've used Wikivoyage page views as a proxy for user interest. Of course, city population doesn't always reflect travel relevance for our readers — so this approach helps identify which places might matter most to Wikivoyage users.
You can take a look at the summary table here:
👉 User:Kned_Wiki/sandbox
Based on that, my proposed selection of cities and destinations for the region page is shown in the 'Feature' column. Happy to hear your thoughts or alternative suggestions! Kned Wiki (talk) 13:20, 14 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm getting a little lost in the table. I don't agree with "other regions", though. If those archipelagos are region articles with component bottom-level articles, they are ordinary regions that should be added to Sicily#Regions, use a region article template, and be added as regions to the static map of Sicily in the article.
In terms of the rest, why don't you simply type your proposed list of up to 9 "Other destinations" here? I'd rather read anything else you're proposing in prose, or otherwise, reorder your table so that like categories of where you propose to put things are shown together.
