User talk:LPfi/AI guidelines

Other version

[edit source]

There is another set of proposed guidelines at User talk:Globetrotter30/AI guidelines. Merging in either direction has been suggested. Pashley (talk) 12:22, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yes. This was noted in User talk:Globetrotter30/AI guidelines#Merger of User:LPfi/AI guidelines into this draft policy. It seems the other draft was deleted on 4 June. –LPfi (talk) 06:54, 23 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Maps

[edit source]

About User:LPfi/AI guidelines#Illustrations: I would think that simpler static maps could be generated by AI with a reasonable balance between getting the work done and being possible to check by comparing with a real map. By "simpler", I mean a map that contains mostly regions and maybe a very few points of interest: e.g., the downtown region is here, the river is in the correct location, the amusement park is over there – not individual streets, but big blocks, similar to File:Wikivoyage Jan Mayen map SVG.svg or File:MapadeFormosa1.svg. Search bias

[edit source]

About "Using AI to find information is OK": Using an AI tool for searching can create bias in what you write about, even if every word is 100% written by you. This is probably not very important for Wikivoyage, but it may be something for anti-AI enforcers to keep in mind. Someone using AI for searching only may have "quirky" contributions (e.g., every destination has a listing for the best playground for autistic kids, because AI decided that was an important thing to include). WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:14, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

You're right that AI has search bias though 1. all search engines have bias in the results they show, and moreso since search ads have become the norm and 2. Most though not all search engines include an AI summary of the search results. That's what millions of people see every day when they search now. Yes there are ways to disable it or lesser known search engines like DuckDuckGo which don't do that, but the vast majority of internet users are interacting with AI now that it's become the default on search. We need the guidelines to discuss what we are theoretically opposed as well as what we can practically enforce or police. Unfortunately there's a gap. Gizza (roam) 08:29, 3 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I added the paragraph with the Hillah example after the first comment. I think it makes the point quite well, at least for less subtle bias. –LPfi (talk) 10:48, 3 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Reorganise?

[edit source]

Currently the article has a lot of level two == headings, I think too many. I'd reduce several to level three, re-order & end up with a structure along the lines of:

(keep current lede)
Problems with AI
Hallucinations
Copyright issues
Search bias
AI-assisted article text (keep current section}
Checking
AI-assisted copy editing
Other uses
Assistive technology
Illustrations
Discussions

Other opinions? Pashley (talk) 15:23, 4 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sounds good to me. –LPfi (talk) 19:34, 4 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes Done, but needs review & perhaps expansion. 14:51, 7 September 2026 (UTC)

Machine translation

[edit source]

This is one of the classic problems in AI research, but not included in what many people now think of when "AI" is mentioned.

Should it be mentioned here? I'd say yes since it also needs disclosure & careful proofreading. Pashley (talk) 14:56, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Definitely, in precisely the way you suggest: machine translations should be allowed, but only when the editor using them has enough command of English to edit the translations into their own words and does so. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:30, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
And enough command of the original language to know what it says – subtleties in the context may tell what meaning of a word is intended; if you don't know the original language well, you may not see that the translator picked the wrong one. Are there beaches or just a shoreline? A spa or showers? –LPfi (talk) 07:13, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think that can generally be inferred from context, though? I've translated plenty of content from dewikivoyage and I know barely any German, and the few things that DeepL might play up with is something that context can imply. //shb (t | c | m) 07:30, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
