Geocoordinates

[edit source]

Hi, Toran107, and thanks very much for updating all those Boston-area articles! One small detail, though: I feel like you're providing too many decimals in your geocoordinates in edits such as this one, such that they are probably accurate to a fraction of an inch.

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:40, 9 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I just copy the location off google maps, and just put them in, it just copies the coordinates' decimal points regardless if I zoom in or out. I could delete all the decimals past the 3rd or 4th digit, but it's a pain to go through all the missing points in all the articles' entries. Toran107 (talk) 21:57, 9 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Of course we're all volunteers here, so I understand and respect your doing whatever you feel inspired to do. Just a thought, in case you feel like doing that some time later. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:03, 9 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Time formatting

[edit source]

Thanks for your updates on various articles. It is easiest for readers if we use one time format per article, rather than changing from one format to another to another through an article. There are two used in Wikivoyage -- a 12-hour format (e.g. 9AM-noon, 2PM-6PM, not 9 AM or 5 PM), and a 24-hour format (e.g. 09:00-13:00 and 14:00-18:00).

Also, we use the format that is used in the country the article is about. Which format is used in each country is set out at the top of the country's talk page, e.g., Talk:South Korea explains that we use the 24-hour clock, not the 12-hour clock, in South Korea articles. I hope that helps. Ground Zero (talk) 15:32, 13 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Climate updates

Thanks for those! Pretty soon, we'll have to update where the coasts are... Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:52, 16 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Temporary account IP viewer

[edit source]

Hello, Toran107.

A recent change now means that all IP addresses are no longer visible to most ordinary users. However, as per WMF policy, any user who has made at least 300 edits with an account older than 6 months may request the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) permission to view IP addresses of all temporary accounts for up to 90 days. You are receiving this mass message because your account is autopatrolled, or has patroller and/or template editor permissions, and have over 300 edits, and thus are likely eligible to request this permission.

Guidelines surrounding the use of the tool can be found at Wikivoyage:Temporary account IP viewer; if granted, you must also accept the WMF policy in your preferences.

TAIV permissions can be requested at Wikivoyage:Temporary account IP viewer/Requests, or on any admin's talk page.

File:Koppen temperate mediterranean world map 1991-2020 -3C borderless.png

[edit source]

Hello.

In File:Koppen temperate mediterranean world map 1991-2020 -3C borderless.png, Central Turkey is incorrectly shown as having a mediterranean climate, whereas academic sources classify it as having a cool semi-arid climate (Köppen: Bsk). Please correct it. And please correct the wrong typo Koppen to Köppen in the file names.

Thank you. ~2026-48841-02 (talk) 17:36, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

The data is from https://figshare.com/articles/dataset/High-resolution_1_km_K_ppen-Geiger_maps_for_1901_2099_based_on_constrained_CMIP6_projections/21789074 . You can download the files and the region is classified as "Mediterranean". Note that areas with winter temperature above -3C are warm Mediterranean zones and not cold Mediterranean zones that some maps mark at +0C, so some minor differences in the maps are correct. The maps in the source you provided, correctly show central Turkey as having a semi-arid climate (Köppen: Bsk), not a mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csa or Csb). Precisely what I am pointing out. The question is not about the temperature range, but about the precipitation range and precipitation pattern in this part of Turkey, where the annual precipitation is too low (avering below 400 mm and in the southern parts below 300 mm), and where the precipitation maximum is in spring not in winter, which does not qualify as "mediterranean" according to Köppen climate classification (nor under the Trewartha and Troll-Paffen climate classifications). Academic sources and Köppen maps classify the climate of Central Turkey as semi-arid (Köppen: Bsk). Please correct Central Turkey in both File:Koppen temperate mediterranean world map 1991-2020 -3C borderless.png and File:Koppen subtropical world map 1991-2020 -3C borderless.png. ~2026-48841-02 (talk) 18:13, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Both my map and the original map have the same small patch of semiarid Bsk in the middle. It only looks small due to the downscaling artifact, but the semiarid Bsk is there and is almost the same shape in both my map and the original map in the file download. I cannot fix the downscaling artifact as the file download only provides a 3600x1800 file to create the maps. In any case the region is borderline since it's located in an area between 95-105% of the semiarid threshold (100% cutoff) and the 68-72% winter threshold (70% cutoff). Toran107 (talk) 18:28, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that it is not a "small patch" and the vast majority of the region is incorrectly depicted as Csa and Csb. The bulk of the region's climate is not "borderline" according to the data and are below the Csa/Csb threshold, being firmly in the Bsk climate zone. The maps you created need to match the sources you have based them on. The maps need to be corrected according to the sources. ~2026-48841-02 (talk) 18:50, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
The maps were created with the data provided in the sources. I have checked the code and the Koppen requirements and there are no bugs in the code and the outputs for the semiarid-arid zone transitions are identical to the semiarid-arid boundaries in the maps provided in the source. The semiarid-arid boundaries are identical and are correct and they are not in error in my maps and the original maps.
And one more thing, in the source, make sure to use the 2026 edition of the files. The maps I use use the 2026 edition of the files. Toran107 (talk) 19:03, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
