Kupang

Kupang is a city in West Timor and the provincial capital of East Nusa Tenggara. There isn't much to see or do in Kupang, but it is not an unpleasant city in which to spend a day or two. Kupang is the launching point for an overland trip to Timor-Leste or a ferry ride to Rote Island.

Kupang was an important port and trading post during the Portuguese and Dutch colonial eras. Representatives of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) first encountered Kupang in 1613 after having conquered the Portuguese fort on the island of Solor. In January 1653, a Dutch fortification, Fort Concordia, was built on an elevated position on the left bank of the river estuary. Kupang then became the base of the Dutch struggle against the Portuguese. The political importance of Kupang increased greatly in 1749 when the Topasses were decisively defeated by the Dutch and their allies, which led to the extension of VOC influence over wide areas of western and central Timor.

Kupang was the final destination of William Bligh after he was set adrift with 18 loyal crewmen following the Mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. After an extraordinary open-boat voyage of about 3,618 nautical miles (6,710 km), Bligh reached Kupang on 14 June, 47 days after being cast adrift.

In the early-to-mid-19th century, the city was a popular destination for British and North American whalers, although its importance declined later in the century as whaling grounds shifted elsewhere.

Kupang came under Japanese occupation between 1942 and 1945, and much of the Old Town was destroyed by Allied bombing. The city saw significant nationalist agitation but remained otherwise peaceful during the Indonesian revolution (1945–1949). The city, along with the State of East Indonesia, became part of the United States of Indonesia in 1949, which was replaced by the present-day Republic of Indonesia in 1950.

As of 2024, the population of Kupang is about 475,000.

Kupang has a tropical savanna climate. Unlike many cities with this climate, Kupang's temperature varies little between the seasons. The hottest month is October (with an average temperature of 28.8 °C or 83.8 °F), while the coolest is July (with an average temperature of 26.1 °C or 79.0 °F). The city experiences extreme wet and dry seasons, with January being the wettest month, while August and September are the driest month.

Grab taxis are available at the airport. A ride into town from the airport will cost a hefty Rp100,000-200,000 as of 2026, although this is still cheaper than airport taxi services.

The bus from Atambua takes 7 hours and costs Rp90,000 as of 2026. Soe is a 3-hour bus ride. Expect loud music.

There are two companies that will bring you from Dili, Timor-Leste, and back in luxury-ish buses: Paradise Tour & Travel and Timor Tour & Travel. The trip all the way from Dili is a 12-hour slog (the leg from Kefa to Kampung is especially tedious) and will cost around US$25 from Dili and around Rp300,000 from Kampung as of 2026. Expect loud music.

As with most cities in Indonesia, motorbike rental is easy enough and starts at Rp100,000 per day as of 2026. Ask at your hotel.

You can use microbuses called bemo. The uniqueness of public transportation in the city of Kupang is due to the appearance filled with accessories, decorations and music blaring. Each bemo is manned by a driver and an assistant who collects the money from passengers. You can tell the assistant your destination/drop-off point in advance. There are multiple routes, so you need to ask your accommodations if any of the bemos are passing by your destinations. Within Kupang the route number can be seen on top of the bemo, whereas for further destination, it will write the destination name. Each trip is Rp 3,000 as of 2018.

Grab, Maxim and Gojek are available. Grab is the most popular here. You won't need to wait long as there are plenty of drivers.

Despite its colonial origins, don't expect much colonial architecture in Kupang – it was destroyed during World War II. The most pleasant part of the city is around -10.1613123.57651 Pantai Koepan LLBK, which is a great place to watch the sunset with the -10.1618123.57492 Kupang Lighthouse in the foreground. The alleyways in the area are worth a wander as well, and some of the building walls are adorned with colorful street art.

During the rainy season, there are several springs and waterfalls frequented by locals; during the dry season they're not really worth visiting.

Jagung bose a thick corn-and-bean porridge and a traditional staple of Timor, serving the role that rice does in the rest of Indonesia. In Kupang you can find it along the sidewalk on the Jalan El Tari (in front of the Governor's office).

Se'i babi, a traditional West Timorese smoked pork dish. Depot Bambu Kuning and Se'i Babi Aroma (two branches) are the two most popular restaurants to try it.

The stalls fry up lots of fresh seafood - fish, lobsters, crabs, etc., while the tahu tempe penyet is a great vegetarian option. Next to the food stalls are drinks stations where the best options are the fresh juice. Juice avokap (avocado juice) and jus naga (dragonfruit juice) are especially common and are blended with ice, sugar, and sweetened condensed milk/chocolate syrup.  (updated Sep 2026)

Kupang is a majority-Christian city, so alcohol is easier to find compared to western Indonesia.

You can find "Travel" shared car for Rp 50,000 or a bus for Rp 30,000 (the bus to Kefamenanu will pass by Soe too, ask the bus assistant).
• Dili, Timor-Leste: can be reached by bus or plane. Timor Tour & Travel offers air-conditioned mini-bus daily service for US$25 (around 12 hours)
• Rote Island: a gem hidden at the bottom of Indonesia. Don't tell anybody!
